Although, to be honest, I've been a Dream Theater fan for like 7 years before I became a TFK fan. |
ah, okay, so it's the DT dudes who took over the TFK thread
i'm at systematic chaos at this point. i was gonna start at the beginning, but i really like jordan rudess. i've liked everything so far...except some of the hot mastering. like tfk, it takes a while to get into some of their tunes for me...especially the really metal tunes. |
Start from the beginning, you won't regret! |
 do it!!!!

When Dream and Day Unite? Or do you mean the Majesty Demos?
At least get When Dream and Day Reunite with James on vocals. Awesome show.

When Dream and Day Unite is the best 80s progressive metal album ever released. It is just recorded by a drunk monkey.

True. People often dismiss it as being bad just because the sound quality is crap, but it's actually quite a good album.

The remaster is just louder than the original.
I would say keep going backwards chronologically if that's working for you. You've got Octavarium next, and that's like, the best prog epic of the 2000s and stuff.

If I I had to start with just 3 Dream Theater albums to get an understanding of what the band is capable of I'd chose I
IMAGES AND WORDS, SCENES OF A MEMORY(Metropolispt2) and TRAIN OF THOUGHT. I feel with those 3 albums you get a pretty diverse sound from the band, although the album AWAKE is my favourite and a real gem at that I would not listed because it carries a similar sound I&W's. GET THOSE 3!!!!

With such bad works, remastering is not enough...

That's why "When Dream and Day Reunite" is the answer - sound quality is good, Rudess plays on it, Labrie sings on it, and they even jam out during some of the tunes.

Original copy is better. Dominici singing is a much better fit because of the style of the songs, although I have to admit LaBRie does rock ' A MATTER OF TIME' though. Also Kevin Moore on keys is the best. Live Rudess, but Moore is my favourite.

The album is incredibly 80's material. Just has that vintage 80's sound that I still to this day, adore. Do enjoy this album. It was a great first effort, but a far cry from their second which is a beast!!!

That's a great performance, but how has been already said, Dominici's voice fits better in those songs, and Kevin Moore's awesome key lines are ofter "ruined" by Rudess. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Rudess' playing, but here he just moves away from that 80s sound and arrangement approach that I love in When Dream and Day Unite.

Obvious choices would be either ACOS or 6DOIT.
That said, The Great Debate is one of my favourites, maybe because I'm involved in medical science/research.

Even though I'm not a great fan of LaBrie's singing, I thought that vocals could only improve on this version of the album... however, indeed Dominici's voice fits better the songs. At first, i didn't really like Dominici's singing, and to hear him though the whole album was a tiresome affair, however the most disapointing aspect of the re-recording was LaBrie's voice. Moore's keyboards were also better suited for the album, and were something special... I don't think Rudess did a bad job himself, it's just that it lost some of the magic. However, where the re-recorded album wins is on heaviness and energy and quality of recording. So, indeed both versions have their pros and cons.

I feel like WDADU is a lost prog-metal gem, and is always over shadowed by I&W.
|
I consider drone metal to be progressive...

I don't feel that. the WDADU recordings (most of them) were off of Portnoy's sh*tty A-Track recordings. It's very interesting though. I'll give ya that, but it's something you cannot crank and really enjoy. :(

Well ok, it's a great album, with a lot of gems and cool ideas, but I&W is on another level, definitely.. I wouldn't talk about overshadowing..

Don't forget Charlie Dominici and Derek Sherinian coming out to play with the band on Metropolis Part I.
