Supper's Ready- Blows me away with it's majesty on very listen.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond- Possesses a spine tingling quality that is seldom found in epics.
Bitter Suite-Pure beauty, especially the Blue Angel section.
Eruption-Been listening to it for 10 years and i'll enjoy it for many more
Musical Box- If it counts, because it's so damned amazing!

All time top 5.....wow....how to choose.....too difficult.....
so many Flower Kings, Yes, Pink Floyd, Transatlantic, Tull, Genesis how can I leave out Marillion, Porcupine Tree, Galahad, IQ. King Crimson....
Here goes:
1) Genesis -- Supper's Ready -- Appocalypse always gives me goosebumps..... 2) Yes -- Gates of Delerium -- the epic battle within the epic, more powerful than CTTE 3) Flower Kings -- Garden of Dreams -- may be considered a collection of bits by some, but what a collection.... 4) Jethro Tull -- A Passion Play -- but Thick as a Brick was very close.... 5) ELP -- Karn Evil 9 -- their last great composition, Tarkus being plagued by such a downer 2nd side.
Songs to be considered that I haven't seen in this thread: Arriving Somewhere but Not Here, Porcupine Tree Brother Where you Bound, Supertramp any of Transatlantic..... I Could be God, Galahad High Hopes, Pink Floyd Shadow of the Hierophant, Steve Hacket Lady Fantasy, Camel and on and on........
how come only 5......?!?!?!?!?

Additionally to a lot of the above (I didn't go through this thread in detail, so there might be multiples), I always enjoyed :
Jethro Tull's Baker Street Muse
Focus: The Hamburger Concerto
Mekong Delta's Dances of Death Suite
Pat Metheny: As Falls Witchita
Sieges Even: Tangerine Windows of Solace
Peter Hammill's Flight
That's six instead of five. Oh well!

1-Procol Harum "In Held 'Twas In I". Why? This is the first Epic song ever by ranging for 17 minutes with 5 segments such as 'Glimpses of Nirvana', 'Tea time at the Circus', 'Autumn of my Madness', 'Look to your Soul', and 'Grand Finale'.
2-Genesis "Suppers Ready". Why? 22 minutes of music ranging from soft acoustic guitars to a great orchestration.
3-10cc "One Night in Paris". Why? This song is divided into three parts and it acts like a opera. This was before Queen did 'Bohemian Rhapsody'.
4-ELP's "Karn Evil 9". Why? A 30-minute segment which talks about machines, a carnival show, and a jazzy-peice that goes way out!
5-ELO's "Concerto for a Rainy Day". Why? This is the only time that Jeff Lynne really gets artsy and has four segments such as 'Standing in the rain', 'Big Wheels', 'Summer and Lightning', and 'Mr. Blue Sky'.
Honorable Mentions-
Beatles-'Abbey Road Side B'
Jimi Hendrix-'1983 (A Merman I should turn to be)'/'Moon turn tides gently, gently away'/'Still raining, still dreaming'.
Strawberry Alarm Clock-'Black Butter Past/Present/Future'.
Chicago-'Ballet for a Girl in Buchanon'
Moody Blues-'The Dream/Have You Heard/The Voyage/Have You Heard (Reprise)'.

Not in order:
Close To The Edge- This is what made me really become a prog fan. Even though there's no story in the lyrics (as far as I can tell anyways), there's definetly a story in the music. When I listen to CTTE, I feel like it could be a symphony. The contrasts in sound are something that I don't often find in rock music and make CTTE
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-IV)- In my opinion, the Pink Floyd song with the most emotion.
Supper's Ready
Karn Evil 9- One of my earliest experiences with prog. I was just astounded by musicianship that went into it.
Dogs- I had never really thought of it as an epic until I saw it on this topic. The soloing is amazing.
2112- Not really sure why I like this song so much. I guess the drumming is a big thing, and it was one of my early experiences with prog rock.
Gates of Delirium- It would be a tough choice for me between this and CTTE. While CTTE succeeds by having an organized symphonic sound, Gates sounds like the band members trying to outdo each other in soloing.
Abbey Road suite- I love The Beatles, and this is just a bunch of great songs.

You misunderstood the lyrics; it is not "the sandy tigers" but "insanity tigers". Trust me; the lyrics are printed in the Amon Düül biography "Tanz der Lemminge" by Ingeborg Schober. But perhaps the lyrics are even more far out this way.

Marillion "This Strange Engine" - There's something different about this epic from the others. There's a grittiness to it during the first 1/3 or so. Then Rothery pulls off one of his best solos. Capped off by that emotional ending.
Genesis "Supper's Ready" - Exhibiting humor and wit, at it's very
essence a powerful and troubling song at times. Absolute masterpiece.
Yes "Close To The Edge" - Like a blissful dream from which you never want to awaken. Very ethereal and imaginative.
Yes "The Gates Of Delerium" - I just remember being swept up the last time I listened to Relayer. I can just as easily be taken in by a piece that showcases beautiful melodies.
Camel "The Snowgoose" - I very much consider this an epic. A piece that brings you to the brink of shedding a tear or two over it's shear beauty. A masterpiece, as well.
Transatlantic "Duel With The Devil" - Beautifully constructed. Edges out "Stranger In Your Soul" just by a hair.
Transatlantic "Stranger In Your Soul" - I love the trade off of vocals between Morse, Stolt, Trewavas and Portnoy.
Spock's Beard "The Great Nothing" - Watching Morse be driven to tears while laying down the vocals (reference The Making Of V DVD) at the end. How could you not get caught up in it and appreciate what a master he is.
Marillion "Ocean Cloud" - Wonderfully produced whilst telling a compelling story. "Grendel" doesn't even come close to this song or "This Strange Engine".
Honorable Mention: The Flowers Kings "Stardust We Are" Neal Morse "The Conflict" Transatlantic "All Of The Above" Kansas "The Pinnacle" Rush "The Camera Eye" Frost* "Milliontown" Dream Theater "Octavarium"

1. Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I - IX). Glorious guitar/keyboards and poignant lyrics. 2. Genesis - Supper's Ready. My favourite band ever - period. 3. Yes - Awaken. Not a huge Yes fan but I love this track. 4. Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn (Parts 1 & 2). OK, the "Horseback" song is a bit naff but otherwise this is excellent soothing music. 5. Pink Floyd - Dogs. Roger lets rip lyrically and Dave wields his mighty axe. Excellent stuff.

And I wouldn't be me if I didn't find an interesting ground to make another list of all of the posts so far. And that will be the best epic according to all the participants combined because I noticed many of the songs were mentioned pretty often and then a list like this makes sense I believe.
And the winner is ....
1. Supper's ready - Genesis 147 pts 43 times mentioned
2. Close to the edge - Yes 141 40 "
3. Gates of delirium - Yes 74 25 "
4. Tarkus - ELP 66 21 "
5. Echoes - Pink Floyd 62 21 "
6. Thick as a brick - Jethro Tull 51 21 "
7. 2112 - Rush 51 17 "
8. Shine on you crazy diamond - Pink Floyd 47 18 "
9. Change of seasons - Dream Theater 45 13 "
10. A Plague of lighthouse keepers - VDGG 37 13 "
I think it's a significant outcome because Supper's ready is Genesis'only true (long) epic and still it beats all the rest also bands with more epics. Another (regrettable as far as I'm concerned) surprising fact is the low position of Shine on you crazy diamond. Seen by many people (also non proggers) as the best (epical) song ever. It just proves: nothing is predictable in life !
By the way: the points given may be slightly debatable because I gave no.1 5 points in each list, no.2 4 points etc. But if someone mentioned 8 songs f.i. I gave nrs. 6/8 also 1 point. (in case you wondered).
Leaves the question: is Supper's Ready the best SONG ever or just the best EPIC ? Maybe food for another topic ?
And last: the reviewer that came closest to the outcome is: ........ GASTON (page 1 below). Congrat.

"Supper's Ready" was nothing but an imitation of "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" (as even the members of Genesis admitted), and not even a really good one. VdGG were a lot more daring than Genesis. Not that I think that "Supper's Ready" is a bad song, but it is by far not as good as its reputation. But the majority of proggers are into symphonic, and so I am not surprised by the outcome. "A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers" is too dissonant in parts for the majority to be really appreciated.

well this is one of my firsts post I ever write and I hope it wont be the last one.
1-Shine on you crazy diamond : Becouse is simple and extremely emotional , and also the fact that is dedicated to Syd makes it so unforgetable. I cant think of any other prog song that makes the listener jump off his seat just with four notes . Brillant
2-Epithaph: The basic mellotron - based prog ballad , also the lyrics made by sinfield are outstanding
3-And you and I : The outro speaks on its own
4-Lizard: This jazzy epic closes one of the most underrated and weird albums in the history of prog.
5-Starless : To give end to such a milestone as red was not an easy job , however fripp& co worked out this 12 minute song with beutiful sax sounds
Also I d like to think that Islands as a 40 minute epic
