Emerson, Lake and Palmer Appreciation

I read Macan's book, and it's a very interesting analyse of ELP's music. I also read Keith Emerson's autobiography " Picture of an Exhibitionnist", It's fun to read.

Some of the 2nd side is first class- Bitches Crystal and The Only Way- the other tracks range from OK- A Time and a Place- to awful- the 'comedy' numbers. I think the one unequivical masterpiece they made was probably 'Trilogy', but 'Benny The Bouncer' aside, 'Brain Salad Surgery' is their quintessential album-but their first 5 albums and the Emerson Lake and Powell get lots of airings from me.

I saw Bruford recently and he said that Bob Fripp always has about 6 minutes of music written when he decides to get a band going.  It was that way with Discipline and Lark's Tongues, where he had written all of Part I and some of Part II.  I said, "That's why all his albums only have six minutes of good music. " (re: Exposure where he redid the Gabrial tune and then gave us 15 minutes of Frippertronics.) If you like ELP you like the filler stuff.  Most of its not that bad, Tarkus is probably the exception. But Benny the Bouncer does not take away from the majesty of Karnevil 9 no matter how you slice him.

Couldn't agree more. "Karn Evil 9" is one of the greatest (prog) suites ever. "Benny" is a fun little track but I usually skip over it. 3/4 of ELPowell is damn good sh*t!
