I should say that it is a too Free Avantgarde disc and I did not understood it. In fact I listened to only the first song and another one but I did not buy it. Nevertheless it is an album to possess only for the importance of the artists involved.

5 stars ARROW HEAD

This disc clearing. It will because it seems an easy disc and then not the it is, it will be because are only in three and they seem in 50!!!... I do not know. However I am secure that an album so done not understand to listen to the all of the days. And a so valid mix of Hard Rock and Jazz is a something of attractive. In general the songs have a mixed structure. In the intro and in the sung parts are Hard Rock and where are not sung is "Bob" Callero and its bass guitar to put the shudders (and here is pure Jazz). "Cucciolo" Favia plague the drums like pits possessed and Zoccheddu plays the guitar with a sole power. As for the songs i should say that "Arrow Head" comes used in a lot of compilations. However it is only the shortest piece of the album. In this sense the other songs have the advisable structure and the better are "Hajenhanhowa", "Soffici Bianchi Veli" and "Orizzonti Senza Fine" where the power of three is united to the magic of the Jazz parts creating a sole and original mix.

Summarized: An album so pleases or no. It does not admit middle courses. But, to quite to see, it is one of the present album of all of the Italian Prog.

Autoproduction. However seen the package this is a demo... Like quality in the booklet I saw of better. But the music... That it has not the magic of their old album (that I have not, but something I have heard) and nevertheless it is very good.

The songs can be framed in a context New Age/ Longue Music that today is ruling (except for "La Mia Vita" and "Bella & Finta", the sole singed song that are Funky Jazz to the Perigeo Special but without that magic). Nevertheless they have a glamour to the which renounces not. "Rain", "Black Hole" (both), "The Clowns", "Piccolo Fiore" (only piano), "Indian Reserve" and "Passing By" are simple and honest, offies of mysticism but ever sweets like honey. Interesting the last two songs discusses from two rare live apparitions of 1995 and 1996. If however "Lakota Live" is cold and calculated (like the studio version) "Il Sig. K" is a classic that in this reduction does not lose nothing of the power and feeling that had in origin.

Summarized: Conceived and recorded between 1991 and 1992 and remastered in 2001, "(1991- 2001) Passing By" is a honest album that does not disappoint but not even surprises. However it is very honest and sincere.

4 stars TWO ALBUM FOR AN ERA

The New Trolls is one of fundamental groups of the Italian Prog. With "Concerto Grosso n° 1" wrote the fine word of this type of Prog, how we will see. But we go with order.

"Concerto Grosso n° 1" is an authentic masterpiece, one of those album that should not be lacking in a discography tht you respected. The part with orchestra is, at my warning, the song of the swan for how much pertains the Prog with orchestra, because the two components are melted to a level that other wanted to obtain staying very being at a distance (to time with scandalous results). And then "4° tempo: SHADOWS (per Jimy Hendrix)" is one of the better moments of the Prog. The long improvvisation that follows an extraordinary group presents us. There is not words to describe it. Different the speech of "Concert Grosso n° 2" because more thrown off balance to favour of the Rock group (extraordinary however "2° tempo: ANDANTE (most Dear Lady)" and good "3° tempo: MODERATO (Fare You Will Dove)"). So make it loses much of the office that a like product should have. The other songs are too POP and, to my warning, succeed to lift them you of a not ugly album but too POP, and listen these in this sense.

If it not have the individual album you got this CD. You will not have changes of mind.

4 stars HARD SYMPHONIC ART ROCK!!!

Not easy like subject "La Bibbia". And the brave idea that if to recorded "live in studio" a very tecnichal LP. The Roman Il Rovescio Della Medaglia, instead, succeeded also too well from this experiment.

To listen to this LP is not easy, because "Il Nulla" place in opening is actual the biblical nothing, in this case made of basic special effects. It follows "La Creazione" good Hard Rock, technician but too simple to listen to. And in the same one skis it isgrafted "L'ammonimento". It changes all with the Jazzy "Sodoma E Gomorra", complicated but not how much "Il Giudizio" that Symphonic Jazz Hard Rock. Here they have surpassed, also in the to think a song so (for the period) original. "Il Diluvio" closes on noises of thunder.

Attractive disc. To my warning a missed masterpiece. In any case is one of the highest peaks of the Italian music.

I never heard it but from the line up it has to be a great album!
 
So many obscure italian prog records are returning to light thanks to this site and to the tons of fans and aficionados all around the world!!!!

The first and only italian band i have, im pretty sure, is Novembre. great stuff but i had no idea that they were italian. i bought their new album soley on the strength of one song.. aquamarine. i'm more into this style of music and was wondering if there were any more italian metal bands in this vein, not the typical prog metal/ power metall of bands like symph. X or Dream Theater.

Bands like Novembre are not exactly "Italianprog"... There are other Italian prog metal bands, of course, like Rhapsody, Black Jester and Moonlight Circus but they have almost nothing to share with the bands listed in this thread I fear...

Bands like Novembre are not exactly "Italianprog"... There are other Italian prog metal bands, of course, like Rhapsody, Black Jester and Moonlight Circus but they have almost nothing to share with the bands listed in this thread I fear...

BTW, yesterday I found another obscure modern italian one-shot prog band:
 
Grimalkin - The Drifting Sailer (1996) Thumbs Up
 
 
symphonic progressive-rock from Neaples, a strong atmospheric keyboards sound with rythmical evolutions and ethereal part with hints to Pink Floyd or Eloy. After this record the band disappeared. What a pity!!!

Sincerely this fact (to produce one, two or max three album) is typical of the Rock Progressivo Italiano and there is not astonish itself. In fund always it happened and it is a brand of factory of the Rock Progressivo Italiano!!! Meanwhile this allowed to a lot of bands to become immortal!!!
 
P.s.: In this manner the second of Raccomandata Ricevuta Ritorno is the sole of Samadhi!!! (for the presence of Regoli and Civitenga and for the label!!!).

5 stars LIVE IN FONT'AMARA

The second album of Il Baricantro is not a Jazz Rock album but a Ethnic Jazz album. The ethnic parts is given from the use of the varied African percussions and from the accentuation of the Funky elements. respect of the Funky Jazz that the Perigeo produced in a lot of songs here we are at the production of a boogie in the sense more elementary that its meaning but united to arrengements a lot near the classic South Italy Folk. All the 7 songs presents these elements (some with plus obviousness, other with except for) and to cite it a rather that another one has not sense. Rather it goes make note that thje songs are a lot simple to understand and leave descriptive every tinsel becoming a wall of sounds built in a very logical melody. Often the electric piano replaces the wha wha electric guitar creating even more simplification (but not more poverty of arrengements).

Summarized: Respect to "Sconcerto" we note a tribalization of the sound and of the rhytms. But not a decadence of ideas. Today "Trusciant" has been album from millions of copies. in 1978 caused only the disbanded of this mythical band.

5 stars GENERATIONS: A STORY OF ALWAYS

Album (and group) that to define dark is to say little! Fundamental album because attractive and original. In truth the sole original thing is the mandolin, that in "La Ballata Del Cane Infelice" replaces the soloist acoustic guitar. In truth the music proposal is the classic Rock Progressivo Italiano, without infamy and without praise. Nevertheless the writing and the arrengements do the difference. And "Per Un'Anima" and "Ad Un Vecchio"they shine of proper light. But, to my too modest warning, the better thing go researched in "La Ballata Del Cane Infelice" for how much already said and in two attractive Rock "Alla Ricerca Di Una Dimensione" and in "Generazioni". "Alla Ricerca Di Una Dimensione" have a double refrain. The first one is used like intro and is structured on the organ, the second, used also like second intro is besed on the wha wha guitar. But all the song is being able and solemn. "Generazioni" is more Rock in the structure but always extremely Prog, however with lyrics dragged and easily memorizables.

Summarized: "Generazioni (Storia Di Sempre)" is a masterpiece of the Prog. And, specially, of that Italian. Fortunately (like routine of the Rock Progressivo Italiano) the sole album of the E. A. Poe is gives back and it still better. And the adjectives could waste themeselves.

4 stars ANXIETY

This album is one of the better album of Symphonic Dark not only Italian but European. This band is in possession of an immense technique and of a singer like Claudio Canali that has a very good style and, together to Francesco Di Giacomo (BMS) is considered one of the better singing some Italian Prog.

The songs, how said, are an is drawn of Dark Symphonic Prog with excellent Rock parts. "Confessione", "Una Regina Strana" e la lunga "L'amico Suicida" are the better songs and show an ability outside from commune. With respect to other Italian Prog band you are aimed on the atmospheres.

Not fundamental, today. For the period of the publishing it remains a fundamental album.

5 stars FEAR OF A MAN WITHOUT A THRONE

Premature to review "Uno" seen alone I bought it alone Saturday? It is able to be but when an album surprises you and the feeling transmits you only the big know to do... Nothing is premature!

Already listened to to "Per Voi Giovani" and published on the skis some radio success "Uno" hits still today because fresh and present. It surprises the mixed office to positive anger of "La Paura", La complessitŕ di "Il Vento, La Luna E Pulcini Blu (Sole Rosso)" to the 1971 considered the best song of the album and also the insertion of the Italiam Hymn (an unrecognizable fragment, to be honest) in "Scacco Al Re Lot". more than for the musical plots (for other best) "Uno" it hits for the feeling that it transmits: load, passion, technique and power. P.s.: excellent also the single (introduced like bonus tracks) "Strisce Rosse"/ "Delirio" that, even if in Post Beat style, is really best.

Summarized: Almost Dark album. But thanks to the VM200/ BTF we have the pleasure of to listen to, to appreciate and to before cry a masterpiece of the Prog. Not only Italian! And, for of more, better today that 30 years does! EXTREMELY RECOMMENDED.

I would like to recommend an italian modern prog band, not symphonic: Spirosfera.
 
As many other italian bands Spirosfera only released their debut album which is to me very good even if it may not be everyone's cup of tea, due to the strange vocals of Nicola Pavan.

3 stars The first record from the then (1996) newly formed label Lizard features the eponimous debut of this modern italian prog band, Spirosfera. As all the albums issued under the Lizard label, the progressive temper is of a high level but, unfortunately still remain obscure for most people. Also the famous chilean band Akinetňn Retard issued some of their works under this label.

Describing the music of this one-shot band is very difficult. Some reviewers say it's a mix between Area and King Crimson plus a sparse metal flavour without abandoning hammond organ, piano and mellotron. Similarities can be found with Deus Ex Machina.

They're not too far from the truth, in my opinion. Spirosfera's trade mark are the dark sound and lyrics and, above all, the weird vocals of the singer Nicola Pavan who goes on (uptone) without any apparent connection with what the instruments are playing. Vocals appear only to follow the rythmic part.

Musicianship is fine and that evident metal addition never really becomes too all- absorbing. Arrengements are often complex but the “melodic” interludes aren't missing as in any respectable italian prog record. Ok, melodic parts a la Spirosfera, but melodic indeed, as in “Pensiero” (6,08 mns) which alternates with fragmented tempo and as “Emanamnesi” with its crazy contralto sax.

Noises have an important role for this album for the apocaliptic and dark visions of the band. Two band's members (drummer Johnny Berto and guitarist Mirko Baruzzo) and the guest musician Nicola Genovese (sax) have also focused their attention on them. The result is well evident in the mini epic “Deteoria” (15,19 mns) that can be considered their sound's manifesto.

All in all, this is a very difficult and demanding listening, mainly for the foolish vocals. At the same time it's very satisfactory for the great musicianship and for the originality in the whole italian contemporary prog scene.

3.50 the correct evaluation: very good.

Very pleasant, modern all intrumental Italian jazz-rock band called AdiB - also known as Assolo di Bongo - album "Spinning like a top" released this year on Musea - very good one!!!

I don't know of their music, really. Only heard the band's name. Sounds interesting, btw. Which is your opinion (and rating) on their recent Spinnng Like a Top? And how about their debut Primetime?
