Cabezas De Cera is a band I like for their original sound.
And of course we need to mention Decibel, Nazca and Banda Elastica.
Musica De Erich Zann I heard once and Liked it, I believe the description is accurate.
Diablo is another band that Memo has introduced me to which is quite good. Labeled here under psych/space.

Memo should come in here and tell us more.

Oh, it happens also with me while i was reading the Mini Guide, i found so many bands that i dont know, and others that their albums are sadly discontinued

Culto sin Nombre only released an album in 1995 called "Hallazgos Nerviosos" the music goes from fusion to RIO but with ethnic mexican sounds, i also think this was another of Carlos Alvarado`s projects...
I think Adam mean Etheria, which honestly i dont know, also no idea about Marcos Mirandas and La Musica de Erich Zann, Los Nena is a band that i have never listened personally, but i have heard great things about them.
Vector Escopolo is another Carlos Alvarado band, that sounds weird, like fusion with electronic and a Frippesque guitar
And Via Lactea is a solo project by (again) Carlos Alvarado, basically electronic and spacial, like cosmic music...

I am also researching about my country`s music, so i`d love to get some of this albums in order to enjoy them of course, and give you better and more specific details

Ahleuchatistas is the next band I am focusing on adding to the site. So I thought I might put a few youtube links up so people can have a listen.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=35Qz_1feeug
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ntIV3OiynPI&mode=related&search=
http://youtube.com/watch?v=C3na8CHkn-E&mode=related&search=
http://youtube.com/watch?v=hGN548rkyOQ&mode=related&search=

There are more (have a look around yourselves), but that should give people an idea.

A well deserved addition Clap. I discovered something new, didn't realize they hailed from Switzerland. Talking about bands from Switzerland I saw you had ordered in Islands, I'm thinking you should love that one.

I love Islands. Saw it for not much, so ordered it (Laser's Edge), along with Flamen Dialis. I passed on Semool for the time being.
Debile Menthol gave rise to another good Swiss band - Nimal, which is not mentioned much. Too bad, a fine album. I shall recommend it in the I Recommend thread in the near future.

Oh, and very nice work on your 4 additions, Adam
Our band list is constatnly expanding, and it's great.

^^^^ I'm not familiar with Nimal's music, but I did just work out Tom Cora was a part of the band, at least for a period (correct me if I am wrong here). Most of the bands he has worked with have been very commendable, so I will assuming it is the same for them as well. Any recommendations of which album to start with?

Also, Assaf, that is going to be 5 additions very soon Wink The Flying Luttenbachers is begging to be added. While looking around for information on the band I found out my record store has their "Infection and Decline" on vinyl for quite a reasonable price, so I'm thinking that is going to be a sure purchase.

Phew finally finished, I never realised they had released so many albums; 15 of them in total.

I will be sure to check Nimal out sometime.

Yeah Adam! And about time too! All I can say is that that lack was one very serious sin of omission! sheeze! [she will admit, it was one of the things which really made me wonder about the legitimacy & erudition of this place upon my initial discovery of it [come on now - almost every thing listed in RIO was Zappa?! wtf was that about?!]

Yeah I was an over due addition. Unfortunately with those charts on the RIO page, the albums are calculated by popularity, as you have noticed here RIO/avant-prog is not one of the most popular genres on the site. They should think about only allowing one album per artist on the recommended list.

Hey, after discovering prog a year or two ago I have mostly been exploring symphonic, neo, space rock, folk and prog metal. Ive decided its time to jump into RIO. All ive heard is Frank Zappa's first album which is good but hardly as avant-garde as Im assuming most of the genre is. I would like some recommendations for good RIO/Avant-Prog albums with some excellent keyboard work (particularly if the keyboard is alot of acoustic piano not just synths and such) Dont worry about giving "easier for begginners" or whatever recommendations since Im very much into avant-garde music so I can probably take whatever despite how weird it may be.

Good to see you taking an interest in the genre. I'm not going to make a must have list of RIO/avant garde list as I really an not good collating these style of lists. Instead I will give you a list of some bands I am really enjoying at the moment. But I think you might find it a little more accessible than you think. Anyway here it goes:

- La 1919
- The Hat Shoes
- Samla Mammas Manna
- Sebkha Chott
- Pataphonie
- Hellebore
- Etron Fou Leloublan
- Fukkeduk
- Boredoms
- La Stpo
- Cerberus Shoal
- Korekyojin

I will let you do a little bit of exploring with some of these, but if you are looking for anymore information about the bands I can give some more in depth descriptions. I hope this helps somewhat

My good friend Adam gave you a very good list which I second (except for the first two which I am not familiar enough with).

I would only add that if you want a good keyboards work, you can listen to Far Corner's 1st s/t album which has good keyboards work on it, although it is borderline sympnoic in sound and style.

Was getting rather bored and started flicking around "The Red Masque's" home page and I was quite impressed with some of the artwork by their lead singer. I thought it might interest some people here, so I will post a few pictures:

enjoy

Very nice pictures, I like it.

It's a nice band, altough I voted against their inclusion in the genre, since I don't think it's enough to have them here. Besides that, I think it can appeal to fans f the genre.

Those are fantastic images. Can't help but think he may have induced some form of hallucinogen though (I base that on the prescence of eyeballs - See how many you can spot)
