That's the good thing about Math Rock. People are gonna think you're smart because you listen to a genre that has the word math in it, but you really don't have to do a thing related to it. But seriously, you really don't like math rock?

yes, I don't. I prefer melodies to complex signatures and slow music to fast and quirky. To be fairly honest, I heard very few albums/artists/tracks to judge, but everything I heard puts me off

surely I heard 65days, I even liked some tunes and the whole album ("The Fall of Math", ironically). Any recommendations for a newbie which band to check first?

Well you could check the ones I mentioned before, Toe's New Sentimentality and Antarctic(which is not on PA) Demo. These bands have a bit of technicality but with melodies unlike most math rock bands. And also 65Days Of Static last album The Destruction Of Small Ideas, which has some good tunes and some really melodic songs.

i just got hella's newest and while fans probably wouldnt like it too much (vocals? bassist? weird) they move away from teh guitar drum duo thing and embrace a mars volta ish sound. not for purists but it is enjoyable, might get you hooked, or at least used to the sound. 65 days of Static is also wonderful and if you havnt heard One For All Time your missing out. lots of piano melodies and aphex twin style electronic beats and rhythms. im also not huge on math rock but those are some bands I dig. oh and battles has their moments ( tonto, atlas, race in)

I also prefer melodies to complex signatures and slow music to fast, but i REALLY enjoy when bands manage to incorporate both into their music. The Samuel Jackson Five are good at this it's like slow math-rock...with a tiny hint of jazz. i would definitely recommend them to you. Especially their Easily Misunderstood album.

Yes, it is worthy, but sometimes a little more boring...or less interesting. It catches my attention less, and it isn't quite as memorable as Easily Misunderstood. I still enjoy it alot though, but if you don't like it much, don't give up on them because there is more. Their follow up album is definitely an improvement.

I'm listening to The Destruction Of Small Ideas again, and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed it! It is definitely more on the post-rock side than their others. There does seem to be more focus on memorable melodies than complexity. There is no shortage of either.
