It explains the disappearance, too; if his is anything like mine, the track currently being listened to will show up on your profile until it's done playing, and assuming the sig updates when it's there it'll show up in his sig. Then, once the sig updates again after the track has disappeared from his last.fm profile, it'll disappear from the sig too.
