I would definitely NOT go chronologically with Ruins, as their earlier works were more in a hardcore/punk vein than the complex zeuhl insanity that they later developed.  Hard to go wrong with Tohjinbo through Tzomborgha.  I would just get whichever one or two of those you can find for cheapest, and then if you like them take it from there.

I feel your pain. I still don't own any Cardiacs on CD (with the exception of the Ditzy Scene single) despite them being my absolute favourite band these days. It's frustrating, but I urge you to be patient. The only other places to purchase Cardiacs stuff right now is the likes of ebay and amazon, where they are being sold second hand for ASTRONOMICAL prices (of which ABC and the band won't see a single penny, of course). The store will reopen when Tim's health has improved enough.

And while I have a foot in, I'm thinking about buying a Ruins album soon but I'm not sure which one. I'm thinking about Ruins II because they seem to have strong discography and I might as well tackle it in chronological order (plus that would be my first purchased album matching my birth year Tongue), but there's no review written for it on the site... Any thought/recommendation?

My introduction to Ruins was actually their last - Tzomborgha (sp?). It worked for me. Mind you, the only other Ruins album I'm at all familiar with are Hyderomastgroningen and Symphonica... The latter is unusual for Ruins as it expands their sound to include a lot of instruments other than the typical bass/drums duo. It's a lot more knowingly Magma-esque, if I recall.

I think I have only Tzomborgha, definitely worth checking out.

Reverse chronological order may make more sense when exploring Ruins' discography; the final line up (with Hisaki Sasashi on bass) was the most obviously prog in terms of both compostion and performance, but there was a strong Zeuhl undercurrent from the outset. The earlier albums paved the way for the likes of the Flying Luttenbachers and would appeal more to fans of the more brutal, noisy side of RIO/Avant, whereas the later ones were more subtle and nuanced. Symphonica is an excellent album, but closer to Koenjihyakkei than the mainstream Ruins releases.

Thanks for the enlightment! Thumbs Up

From the samples on PA, I had a feeling it would be a real treat whichever way I went, but I had not realized Ruins had evolved so much over the years. Would you say their earlier albums sound anything like Boredoms? I have and occasionally enjoy Pop Tatari, but I really have to be in a peculiar mood, otherwise they go beyond my comfort zone.

Ruins is ALWAYS like that as far as I'm concerned; I have to be in the right mood, and I'm exhausted after one album.  That being said, I really enjoy their music when I'm in the frame of mind for it.  They're definitely not experimental in the same sense as Boredoms (or Vroodoms I guess they're called now), and frankly I find Ruins' early work to be rather unrefined rather than experimentally noisy.

Nah, Boredoms and Ruins, imo, are a pretty different kettle of fish, apart from both having punk influences early on in their careers. Ruins are a lot more serious than something like Pop Tatari and compositions are tight and intense, with vocals reminisent of 灰野敬二. Their earlier albums are very raw sounding which a think constitutes to many peoples listener fatigue.  If you enjoy Ruins I have a tons of other recommendations.

Avanti! is interesting. Its much denser than Parade and other recent works for Miriodor. It actually reminds me a bit more of their early material, which have less quirky/overtly fun sections that Miriodor are known for. Tracks are also much longer, which also somewhat harkens back to their earlier days. Also less saxophone/exotic instruments, which I don't think of as a plus. Now thinking about it, perhaps its more Avanty with its various electronic sounds, wall-of-sound mentallity, and decreased amount of well definied (of tyipical Miriodor) hooks.

All in all its actually a bit of a difficult listen, which is not something I would say of Miridor up until this point. Definitely requires multiple listens, as I feel I'll enjoy it more being I know what I'm expecting this time. Probably about a 3 after listen one.

So, having added eX-Girl to the archives, it would be silly of me not give 'em a mention in this thread. If you dig pretty much any Japanese avant-prog currently listed in the archives then there's a very good chance that these ladies will be up your street as well! "Back to the Mono Kero" is a truly excellent album. I'm also rather enjoying "Endangered Species", but I don't think it's the best introduction to the group.

MINE TOO!!

In this album, the magnificent drummer goes for a more deeply eclectic approach to his percussive role, incorporating vibes, tympani and some other stuff to the band's instrumental color. That's one of the many factors that make this album an absolute highlight in RUINS' career.

             Kind regards.

HI AVANT FRIENDS, THIS IS CÉSAR INCA.

I've just got my copy of Nichelodeon's album: you can check their material at
www.myspace.com/nichelodeonband  - a sort of chamber-rock pretty much inspired by Opus Avantra , Art Bears and "Gudrun"-era Pierrot Lunaire, yet having much originality.

             Highly recommended!!!

Agreed - I'll be posting a review in the next couple of days. Members of Yugen are involved, there's a bit of Handel, an interesting diversion on dissolving gnocchi and much else besides.

There's plenty to explore. If you like Zu then Painkiller might appeal to you (similarly hardcore sax/bass/drums involving John Zorn) or, if you're after something more whimsical, Etron Fou Leloublan.

If you haven't done so already, check out some Art Zoyd as well. There's a bit of crossover with UZ (Daniel Denis worked extensively with AZ in the late 80s and early 90s) and their earlier albums are exemplary chamber prog. Their later albums used more samplers and electronics, still worth a listen but try the early albums first.

Splendid! I'll have to dig out my albums out for another listen. Sadly I cannot remember which ones I have.

There are couple of off-shoot/related bands/artist. I pretty sure some of the girls have played on Hoppy Kamiyama's (Soft Mountain) solo efforts, I have not heard any of his music tho', but A Meaningful Meaningnessless is supposed to be a really solid album. There is also Super Junky Monkey http://www.rockofjapan.com/superjunkymonkey.html who features Keiko (guitarist: eX-girl), their sound is very different from eX-girl. I have heard their album Srew Up, which is in the funky rock/metal relam, so possibly not everyones cup of tea, kind of reminded me of RHCP crossed with RATM, but with crazy japanese vocals. Following the Super Junky Monkey, there is the band Tricomi http://www.eqcd.net/tricomi/index.html, who I have been trying to track down, from reading a couple of review, there sound is close to the quirky pop we have come to love, and throw some sound explorations to boot. Could be trash, but If anyone has their album Good girls get fed, Bad girls get eaten please give me a shout
