^ Why not do some research on eBay or Discogs, to see what these sell for? On Discogs you can look up sales prices (and the history thereof with highest/lowest/average etc) not only by the title, but also by the release.

The only benefit is there is no surface noise in quiet passages, that's it.

The Division Bell 20yr anniversary vinyl issue is cut from the original analog masters, released by Parlaphone records but not sure who pressed it, there are no liner notes, not even sure who mastered it. It has a mix that simply creates a wonderful analog magic, it makes certain parts of your brain click differently than when I play the CD.
When I play TER right after the mix seems to be very comparable, not sure but I will guess TER was mastered to a 24bit file, which is perfectly fine, the mix has a wonderful analog feel/sound to it, I don't have this on CD so cannot compare.
Yes, there are some CD's that sound really great but not most. Last month I recorded on CD an album I downloaded from Bandcamp on Flac and it sounds very good considering the format Smile

If it sounds as good as TER it's great, my copy of TDB lacks that powerful sound. I have the 2011 remaster by the way, I don't know how's the original.

I need one of those to put between the self-titled and Trilogy Wink
My copy of Trilogy is also German, but issued by Manticore. It's the lightest vinyl in my collection, so it obviously doesn't sound very good Ouch

I dragged home no less that ten beat-up, 50+ year old records yesterday. One of the records, titled Hi-Fi Sampler, has a picture that rather vividly illustrates how the 1950s-1960s families went about methodically destroying their records:

"Here, Doris, grab this one with your greasy fingers and rub it .. attagirl! Now, Chuck, let's get a couple of them  piled on the floor, without jackets. That's my boy".

LOL Did you get anything good? Smile

There is a site called 'popsike' where you can see how much an album is worth. The results are generally from various auction results, but it mixes it all up to give an 'average mean' value. It's interesting to browse through, although once you've looked up a dozen or so titles it stops (I'm assuming you have to sign up or something ??). But check again the next day for more results etc.

Thanks for your response. I've been trying to research the value of some of my 70s prog albums.
I've seen a lot of UK pressings listed but seldom see any US pressings for the same LP.
I've noticed that King Crimson and Gentle Giant LPs have very high prices but I never find prices on the US versions.

Like anything else it depends.....Just because it was pressed in UK, Germany, Italy, Japan does not mean it has more value than the US counterpart pressing. What I find is the sound quality of those overseas pressing are better, the mastering overseas was/is pretty good. That has no $$ value, what has value is if the pressing was limited runs or something quirky or special about it.

Always check discogs for a range of prices, make sure you match all the spine codes, deadwax, UPC and such info.
Thanks. I just started doing research because I'm considering selling off a lot of my collection. My grown children are not interested in inheriting them regardless of whether they are worth anything or not. I'm not sure where to or how best to sell them. Eighty per cent of them are from the seventies and are in excellent to near mint condition.

There are always the fleabay sites.....To get your best value sell them on audio sites, but most probably you need to join. For example AudioKarma (AK), has a BarterTown where you can sell but need to join and pay a small fee.
People sell vinyl there all the time.....or there is CL.

Good luck.

Have you tried the Scrubbing Bubbles process? I have on a few $1/LP finds and it does a good job getting grime off. You need to protect the label somehow........I bought some round electrical covers that are weatherproof so they have a gasket. Drilled a hole in both and use a nut and bolt to screw thru the spindle hole, that helps keep the label dry.
Then you can rinse them in the sink and use the spray hose for more pressure.....tedious but it works well on those bargain finds.

^ I have been contemplating designing some kind of water-tight covers for the labels .. I might try your idea.

I have tried to soak records in all kinds of foamy cleaners; there are three things to watch out for: because of the water surface tension, it's terribly hard to get any liquid deep inside the grooves (even with a surfactant). Also, domestic cleaners have additives, and some of them aren't even reported because they are not haz. Not sure if such additives are helping or hurting the process. And, of course, the quality of your wash- and rinse water is of essence - if you use just soft water, it will be still loaded with all kinds of dissolved (and possiblity suspended) solids, which may or many not precipitate inside the grooves.

Absolutely my best sounding colored/splatter vinyl I have, the sonic's are excellent, the instrument details are killer, so much air around all the players. These were mixed for vinyl and it shows/sounds it....

Here is what I devised to cover and protect the labels when I wash them in the sink with Scrubbing Bubbles.....all bought at home center store for like $10.00

What are the thoughts on Anti-Stat sprays ?? I occasionally used Anti-Stat on some murky looking vinyl and find that a lot of build-up within the grooves plays out and comes to the surface upon spinning. I'm not convinced that it's kosher, though. The end result is a 'better than it was before' kinda thing, but the ingrained dust which loosens and rises to the LP surface also collects on the stylus. Oh, it's a labour of love to clean vinyl......

Yep, this is a mind-boggling conundrum: apply your antistatic concoction and watch some of it lodge in the grooves. Forego the antistatic and enjoy some cozy click n' crackle :)

I went to the local record store today and saw some KC LP's there, so I won't need to order them after all. They had Poseidon, Islands and Red: I have none of these and I could only take one but Red seemed prioritary after all that talk about it Smile
About the sound, it barely has any surface noise like José said, which makes 'Providence' a wonderful experience, and also no volume issues. The quality is amazing and all those low volume tracks are easily perceived.... and 'Starless' gave me goosebumps Approve
Long story short, it's a glorious release of a glorious album Big smile

^ you are tempting me to buy this new reissue. I have a 40-year-old one, in very good shape, but the way you two are describing these .. I will never save any money for a new car!

This is where I'm at. I'm still getting around in a 'wreck-on-wheels' because my priorities are Prog vinyl and travelling.
Having said, currently in Florida, with Magenta's 27 Club on my iPod. Thats all I need for a few weeks, no Prog withdrawal symptoms (yet....)
