It's definitely not that I don't like the songs, I just find their placement on the album awkward. Admittedly, it's hard to follow up such a song as Boxing Day, so We Can't Afford doesn't have any qualities as a song that make its placement bad. However with Broken Birds, I always found it such a strange place to go, right after the climatic Jerks and right before the epic Gun Song. It just doesn't seem to fit. Similar with Dreams Fall Hard. Burning Man really gets loud and exciting, only to be contrasted with the acoustic opening.

That one's kinda meh for me as well and I can get that, though every song on the album is phenomenal.

I never seemed to find the placements awkward. I like things to change from song to song; gives it a more varied feel.

One of the things I liked about Twin Fantasy and Monomania was the cohesion and the ability for the sum to be greater than its parts.

Also, I think Plane Crash Blues is becoming my favorite right after Boxing Day.

That's good too. As long as the music's good I don't really care how it's placed.
I didn't like Monomania as much as TF and NYM. I think it was all the synths
Both of those are real good

I think placement is pretty important on an album because songs are like chapters in a story. When I make a playlist, I'm not going to go from Naked City to Klaus Schulze.

Monomania was a great step forward but I agree that I didn't like it as much (still easily 4 stars). I saw it as Will developing his sound and production skills further. What made TF so great was the prefect imperfection of it and that went away in Monomania. Now that he's become better with production and all that, he's made his perfectly perfect NYM.

I love albums that work really well as an experience/cohesive album/whatever, but if it doesn't work like that I can still enjoy it for what it is. Plus sometimes it's good for chapters to be black and white, to surprise the listener.

And exactly trues

Surprise is fine, but sometimes it just kills the mood that you've spent the last 15-20 minutes building up.

THAT WASN'T ANY BETTER
THAT DIDN'T MAKE ME FEEL ANY BETTER AT ALL
I THOUGHT IT WOULD
BUT IT DIDN'T

Surprise can be as essential to the piece as a whole as anything else, but unless it makes sense, it's not wise to use it.

Oh and also I read in an interview that Will wanted this album to be kind of like one of those really long double albums like the White Album and Trout Mask where it's like a big mess of a lot of songs, so that may explain the lack of  coherency
