The band was founded in 1969 by twin brothers Colin and Stewart Goldring, who were joined by drummer Nigel Pegrum from Spice (the band that would later evolve into Uriah Heep), Peter "Mars" Cowling on bass, John Earle on vocals, and Charlotte Fendrich on piano. They came up with the strange band name by reversing and slightly rearranging the brothers' surname.

i have read that JK Rowling coined the name Voldemort out o her own head, but coincidently some lingiusts have found at that the words Volde and Morte can be traced back to old french language, and latin. That can give a hint that a coined name (as fresh and original as it may sound) can have an older meaning/origin, even if the reason behind the name isnt intended to be that

so that can mean though random as it will then be, Gnidrolog can have a deeper origin totaly unrelated to the names coinage,  then what actualy is/was the case for the coining of the word

but that is just my opinion right

taken from wiki

According to the author, Voldemort's name is an invented word.[8] Some literary analysts have considered possible meanings in the name: Philip Nel states that Voldemort is derived from the French for "flight of death,"[9] and in a 2002 paper, Nilsen and Nilsen suggest that readers get a "creepy feeling" from the name Voldemort, because of the French word "mort" ("death") within it and that word's association with cognate English words derived from the Latin mors.[10]

That account is only from wikipedia so there probably is a bit more to it anyway.

And probably not so coincidental that the roots of Voldemort are in old French since J.K Rowling has a French family and is fluent in French herself.
