oh yeah, also saw Paper Heart- which was okay. I do not care for Charlyne Yi (can anyone be more uncomfortable and unsure of themself?) and Michael Cera just plays the same goof in every movie (even though this was supposed to be documentary style and they were playing themselves). the only thing I liked about this was the paper cutout puppet scenes. It felt forced and akward. Another "that's it?" movie.

1989 Batman
7/10
I really do like this comic book Tim Burton world in this movie, probably even more than the current series of Batman films. As always, Jack Nicholson is fantastic. Thing is, it will always be overshadowed by The Dark Knight (at least for a little while longer), a movie that it really has no business being compared to. It's tough to judge quality between the two since they were two distinct styles of superhero movie. Also, it hasn't aged too well over 20 years.

Iron Man 2:
An entertaining follow up to the first film. I enjoyed the first film mostly for the humor value of Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark as he stumbling through life and becoming a "super hero". And if you enjoyed the first film for that reason then, by all means, you should get a similar level of enjoyment from the second film, especially with the addition of Sam Rockwell as the bungling Justin Hammer.
Actually, the real star of this film is Scarlett Johansson's figure, I mean ouch:
Really couldn't find a picture online yet to do her appearance in this film justice. She certainly added a tongue-hanging-down-to-the-ground element that the first film didn't have. See the picture and you'll agree: Yipes, just yipes. Edited by manofmystery - May 12 2010 at 16:23 |

You mean as a Mystery Science Theater episode, right?
Was the series finale, sadly. Damn you Sci Fi Channel! *shakes fist in air*

that network used to be a fun place that showed old classics and fairly good original shows-- now it's mostly cheap movies about giant snakes |

It may not have been their greatest episode but it wasn't the most they were given to work with either. Diabolik is certainly no Final Sacrifice.

The Usual Suspects--I didn't even know there was a twist ending going into it, so I was a bit surprised, as you can imagine! The humor of the movie didn't really work, and I think to really enjoy the movie you have to sort of disregard the twist. I prefer to think that it was mostly true because if it's not it is the dumbest movie ever.

I wouldn't say it necessarily means Spacey's character made it all up, the end suggests he indeed was Söze |

Yes, we know he's Soze, and he did really get the other thieves on the boat somehow to kill them and that dude, and maybe they even really stole the jewels from the police car, but if we take it very literally, it's possible that everything else he said was a lie, which doesn't leave much of a story. Full Metal Jacket--So much better than Apocalypse Now (and even A Clockwork Orange), and the soundtrack was only mildly annoying at times. I get the point of using pop songs in the soundtrack, but it still annoys me. Anyway, 4.5/5. Now I'll have to see if Platoon is as good.

I agree that it's a great movie, but I disagree where you say it's better than Apocalypse Now and A Clockwork Orange. Those two movies are probably top 5 for me. FMJ is probably top 15, but yes, Kubrick really can do no wrong.
I haven't seen Platoon either, but a number of critics say it's far and away the best Vietnam movie around. It's up against some stiff competition, I know that much.

To be fair to A Clockwork Orange, I watched it streaming on Netflix, and it would desync and quickly repeat frames in order to make up for it. At the time I thought it was an intentional effect because of Alex's insanity, but it was really disorienting and by the end of the movie was happening every minute or so, so it really changed the movie. I need to see it normally to give a better judgement, but I don't feel moved to do that anytime soon. Just a tad too much rape there, Stanley...
And also to be fair to Apocalypse Now, its thing of emotion as expressed through the music of The Doors really pissed me off, and I imagine that if you liked The Doors it would be a better movie. Also, I forgot to mention how fantastic Life in the Undergrowth was. Yes, it was oddly fixated on mating, and the dubbed in sound effects and sound track were a little overbearing, but the shots they managed were unbelievable. If you have any interest in nature documentaries you should watch it, David Attenborough is an amazing person.

Platoon is far from the best 'Nam movie, it's just very watchable and doesn't force you to think too much like Apocalypse or the Deer Hunter-- actually my favorite Vietnam flick is More American Graffiti , the sequel to the '73 film which depicted Nam as the confused, filthy place it tended to be for U.S. soldiers

Forbidden Planet
Not enough good things can be said about this truly seminal film, and considering it was 1956, it is a phenomenal cinematic achievement. From the stunning mat paintings, innovative Theramin score & sound effects to the technologically-informed script and cerebral undertones, Forbidden Planet influenced countless sci-fi mainstays and provided the blueprint for Star Wars, Star Trek, and Lost in Space just to name a few. A rescue team from Earth encounters fantastic events on planet Altair 4 after meeting Dr. Morbius, his daughter and their robot. Soon an invisible creature begins attacking the crew, and the captain enlists Morbius' help in stopping it. The visual and aural qualities of this one are enough to recommend it and if you dig oldies, it's a must. Edited by Atavachron - May 29 2010 at 04:49 |
