I've been sick of that.

I also hate reading all the reviews where people blatantly indicate that they can't stomach avant, metal, or anything other than a "classic prog" sound that they're familiar to. It's no different than most people being familiar to that pop sound and never trying anything else. Confused

Tell me about it.  Thumbs Down

I mean, why even come to this site if that's the case?  There's not that many "classic" bands...it's not hard to acquire their entire discography, then you can just listen to them over and over...

I agree entirely.

I think people on this site are not willing enough to try anything new. It took me a while to enjoy even things like Zappa at first (and it didn't help that the first song I heard was something off of Weasels), but you can't expect to be raised on our culture's music scene your whole life---and then hear something like Univers Zero and completely grasp all of it.

It's simply not very likely. Some people can do it, but not everyone. Me... I had to gradually transition my way through the sub-genres. And it took alot of determination. People just aren't willing to do that... it troubles me, but in the end it's their loss anyway---not mine.

I pretty much enjoy every single sub-genre on this site now, and tons of other stuff I never thought I'd like. There's just so much great music out there; I can't see how someone could restrict themselves like that.

Absolutely.  I first got exposed to Canterbury, then sort of "worked" my way up through RIO/Avant; at the same time Magma finally clicked.  It would be inconceivable to me 2-3 years ago that I would be listening to this sort of thing.  But I can't think of anything more rewarding than all the great music I've discovered being part of the site.

I did the same thing, only I didn't work through Canterbury oddly enough.

I never thought I'd be at this point either. I think with my 2009 releases that I own I cover nearly every sub-genre on here, and some others (I also have the new 2009 release from Merzbow, haven't heard it yet though).

Listening to "red" albums today.  Wink

Vapor Trails, Acquiring the Taste, and now Suffocating the Bloom

I'm jittery as hell from all the coffee though...I might have to partake of a little something to combat that.  Wink

Hmm... I never thought of listening to similarly colored albums in one day. That's a good idea! I'll have to do that after my 2009 marathon.

Those are 3 very good albums; I really love them all but for totally different reasons. Clap

Make sure you listen to King Crimson's "Red" today too. Tongue

Oh, wait... well, do "Discipline" instead. It's better anyway. Wink

I really liked that Cirrus Bay track I heard yesterday, I may grab that album from Amazon MP3.

Their website was interesting - it's this older dude who's just a dyed-in-the-wool progger who is also a guitarist/composer...I think the female vocals on the record are his daughters!

Apparently one of them got married, they had photos up - and they have one of the father dancing with the newly married daughter....to "Matte Kudesai"!  Clap

...it's like good beer, coffee, or wine - several exposures are required before one even begins to discern the various elements that comprise it. For example, t took me upwards of 10 listens before I could even comprehend what was going on with Winter Songs, but I now consider it to be one of the highest artistec expressions of our century.

By the way, I don't if I told everyone that my wife will be able to move back home with the childcare since she won't have any toddlers (most likely) and so long as no one recognizes it as a business. Smile

I really like them both, but I think I'd give Discipline an easy 5, and I'd end up rating Red with a 4. Larks' is the masterpiece from the Wetton era, I think.
