Somehow the magic of this one was lost on me, though Clint Eastwood continues to foster good material and personal depth in his lifelong cinematic journey, and the commentary on race relations picks things up where Do the Right Thing left them.  A sort of reverse inside-out Karate Kid with more gritty realism but none of the uplift, I do give Gran Torino much credit for taking risks in storytelling and casting, and features an excellent ensemble of young Asian-American actors.  But the balance of conflict with triumph achieved in Million Dollar Baby is missing in this one and the pace seems a bit off.  Still, a refreshing foray into yet another direction for the creatively progressive Eastwood, and film that retains its dignity.

I saw this movie recently too and I liked it a lot.  My only problem with it was that at some points the main kid's acting was pretty bad.  Otherwise though it was enjoyable and downright hilarious at some points.  Humor was used well, clint eastwoods acting is great as always, and they didnt rush his character development which made the story believable.  I especially enjoyed the relationship between him and the priest and the ending even caught me by surprise a little bit.  I watched it just to see clint eastwood being a badass old man and I got more than I expected

Definitely with you on this one - darkly comic in places, Tilda Swinton & Peter Stormare steal the whole picture:

Reeves wooden? Yes, but played well (for him) - entertaining & nice concept; reminded me (in a vague way) of Dogmna

A SERIOUS MAN
7/10
Not real big on the Cohen brothers, but this may be my favorite from them that I've seen (I have yet to see some big ones though). I laughed here where I didn't laugh in Fargo.

THE GODFATHER
8/10
I finally saw this for the first time (in my film class, no less) and I agree that it's one of the most well-made movies I have seen. That does not, however, mean that it's one of my favorites. It moved too slow for my taste, and while the cinematography (sp?) was some of the best I've seen, the movie never engaged me. It just seemed to be rather cold, almost. Perhaps that's because of the rather casual stance it takes with death, as opposed to......

APOCALYPSE NOW
9/10
And here's the other big one by Coppola, which I prefer over The Godfather. I connected personally with this one, something I missed with The Godfather. Super acting from the whole cast, brilliant camera work.....And for the record, my favorite opening sequence of any film I have yet seen. The Doors + palm trees blowing up = two thumbs way up from Tarquin "Ebert" Underspoon.

glad to see this thread I started still going strong!

Bad Lieutenant POCNO - one thing about this movie that I really liked is seeing Nicholas Cage once again playing a Creepy/Quirky guy which he does so well, its been a while since I've seen him in a role like that, it was entertaining but no where near as good as the original, I think Herzog lost his marbles too, this was such an "un-Herzog" movie I can't help but feel it was a but it was more of a playful endeavor for him, 6/10

I spent £8 buying Avatar out of Asda. Not looking forward to it with any great hope................i am pleased to announce that i was right. Avatar is the biggest single piece of horsesh*t i have ever had the misfortune to watch. Piss poor story, graphics i have seen better on some computer games, and some of the worst acting since the girl Coppola was let loose in the Godfather 3. Dreadful is the best i can call it.

Out Cold (1989)
Firmly in the "enjoyable but nothing special" range.
Not to be confused with the a more recent skiing "comedy" this film follows John Lithgow and one of those generic 80s actresses as they try to capitalize off an accidental death.  Randy Quaid gets involved and things escalate.

Time always wins.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Watched it for the first time tonight.  On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd give it a 14.

In what way does The Godfather trivialize death? I would say that it takes death extremely seriously. I didn't like Apocalypse Now very much, but I hate The Doors so there you go.

Urgh, but it's sooooo precious! And Jim Carey is pathetic! And half the movie was filler special effects! Synecdoche, New York was better, even if it stopped making sense halfway through?

Last movie I watched was Psycho, though I'd seen it before. 9/10; gets a point docked for the hilariously-bad mother+cop scene. Wink

I couldn't agree more with this, as I feel exactly the same way as this guy on all counts. Here's hoping that 3-D is merely a passing fad in Hollywood. Otherwise, I'm just going to have to avoid the movies from now on. Wink

A couple more for me this weekend:

McLINTOCK:
2/10
Some campy old John Wayne western "comedy". I dislike westerns, I don't like John Wayne, and I didn't find this movie "funny" at all. 100% personal taste, but...well, there ya go Tongue

THE KILLING
6.5/10
Kubrick is probably my favorite director, so I had high hopes for this '50s film noir work of his. Needless to say, I thought the camera work was phenomenal, but I was not a fan of the non-linear narration. Other than that, it was interesting to see his early work and recognize the seeds that were planted for later, greater works. It also occurred to me while watching this...I pretty much detest all the women in Kubrick's movies. Yeah, yeah, I know, there are like, what, 4 of them total? LOL

BRILLIANT article!
I absolutely hate 3D. Avatar looked like cardboard, and the glasses made the screen so dark I could barely make out the finer details.
On top of that I had to pay about 6$ more for the ticket, and the movie theaters here charge another 2$ for the glasses

On a plane from Dubai to Sydney, I watched Twilight and New Moon back to back They were less terrible than all the hype around them being ridiculously lame and bad was, although they were still incredibly lame.
2/5 for Twilight, 2/5 for New Moon.

Also watched Law Abiding Citizen which was pretty cheesy but entertaining enough.
3.5/5 for that one.

Also watched the Disney Hercules which was just as awesome as when I was 6.
4.5/5

Where The Wild Things Are- glad I did not see this in the theater.  It was drastically changed from the book (which I last read as a child) and modernized too much.  I found myself actually bored for most of it.  I just was left with a "That's It?" feeling at the end.  4/10
