Camel's debut is amazing if you ask me, so why the surprise?
Magma's debut is third so 13 people love zeuhl. Cool!

I'm surprised so far Piper got 19 votes. LOL

Without a single shade of doubt it's Gentle Giant! Acutally, their debut is one of their best albums! Soft Machine is also very nice as is Piper and Camel. Magick Brother is also great!

LOL

it ain't like people dislike Camel... some just don't see the logic of putting a 4th division band, in relative terms.. a mutt into the Westminster dog show.. and it winning over bands with far more talent, far more interesting and creative albums.   It isn't like we dislike Camel... we just pity the fans... for having mud in their earsThumbs Up

I like Camel... their first 2 albums at least. Embarrassed However they are gulity of one of greatest of all prog war crimes against humanity by drafting Richard Sinclair, one of the greatest singers in all prog, then continuing to put one of the worst of all prog singers in front of the microphone.

For the that crime they were permanently relegated.. for all eternity to the 4th division of progdom..

Latimer man.. great guitarist but perhaps he was the best of the original 4 in trying to carry a tune.. but only in alternative universes or a fanboys's mind could he ever be considered a good vocalist. LOL

He was singing on the debut too (Slow Yourself Down, Separation....) and, yes, Sinclair is miles better. But just to piss you off more, SWilson was going to front Camel and dedicate Neon Magic to you

I doubt that. Let's just say I am not on SWilson's X-mas card list.... I, and my hit squad of thugs and goons, was pretty much responsible for running him off of this forum when he joined here looking to soak up some hero worship LOL

I think I like that 4th division the most LOL, something must be wrong with me Big smile

Why aren't Magma or Soft Machine first league? They were quite groundbreaking when they came out.
Or PFM for that matter.

Jethro Tull first league? Why?

I wouldn't devise things like that, in fact I wouldn't do that at all. If I like a band, I'll listen to it, no matter the genre or how it's received by media or others...

obviously it isn't based on what I like and what I do not... consider it a half assed attempt to group them by importance, impact/influence, and overall quality.

Generally 1st tier groups are groups that even non-prog fans know... that easily devides into the big 3 (ELP, Yes, KC) and the 2nd 3.

2nd tier are those that were as good and groundbreaking innovative.. but are more cult groups. Known and beloved by prog fans, rarely known outside of prog circles.
