I've been a "musically opinionated" poster on a political forum for a few years now and oftentimes younger people will send me clips of bands that they refer to as "fill-in-the-blank"-prog and while some of the music is good I just don't see any connection to bands that I think of when I think of the term progressive rock: Genesis, King Crimson, ELP, etc. Maybe it's just an unconscious attempt on my part to keep that term in the 1970's? |
Perhaps it's more an unconscious attempt by these prog-genre-of-the-month bands to identify their music with musical giants of the past.

To be honest, I feel like Genesis is possibly the most overlooked amongst the greats. countless times have I met so-called "prog-fans" who say they've never heard Genesis but love bands like Yes, KC, ELP, and sometimes even Phil Collins/Peter Gabriel. It's crazy, I know but if Genesis is not introduced along with the prog greats I can see how it can be hard to get into them later. especially for younger listeners into heavier prog.

I was about 7 years old when my first exposure to Genesis was when Abacab came out and their videos got heavy rotation on MTV, but I didn't purchase my first Genesis album until Invisible Touch.

Genesis Live. Changed my life forever when my friend 's older brother played it to us little boys. From then I bought everything up to "Wind and Wuthering". Interesting: the first time I listened to their first album "...to Revelation" was late in the 90s. From what I read, some of you are maybe with me.

Selling England. Didn't like it, but the opener was pretty good so I decided to try out some other albums, which turned out to be far superior to Selling England.

good question. It was probably Lamb Lies Down On Broadway when I was 14 or 15. I particularly liked the song "Abacab" early on as well, and listened to the Collins era quite a bit as well as the Peter Gabriel era. Lamb Lies Down is a top favorite. This is around the time I discovered many bands thanks to an online music subscription. I can't remember, but Alan Parsons Project seems to most dominate my memory of this period in my life, as well as albums like Lamb Lies Down and Abacab. Geez, 8 years ago... Amazing how much Prog I've listened to since then

I was 13 years old. i could not understand exactly what i was listening to. I was not surprised until 3 years later when i re-discovered it. i still remember the tears in my eyes when i heard "ripples" and "mad man moon"
My next one was "selling England..." That was the moment when i was sure that this will be my favorite band of all time....indeed!!

I was used to listen to both "Nursery Crime" and "Selling England By The Pound" because my elder brother was a big fan of them in the Seventies. He played them almost every single day, That was so boring to me!!!
At That Time, I was just five, six years old child and I remember I wasn't so much attracted by this kind of music stuff yet, as It sounded so strange to me...strange but interesting..."The Musical Box" attracted and repulsed me at the same time,you know It really scared me! The telling of this macabre horror story and then the Peter Gabriel voice screaming "WHY DON'T YOU TOUCH ME NOW...NOW...NOW...NOW..NOW!!!...It's all creepy!!!...
...few years later, I had become a huge Genesis fan!!!...:)

When I was at school my best friend borrowed me Genesis Genesis which he called 'Shapes', I loved it, was amazed at Home by the sea and second home by the sea, then he lent me Invisible touch which had just come out, I was blown away by Domino and was hooked by then. We then both began to buy tapes (tapes! Ha!) from Woolworths of all the older albums and enjoyed each one of them, but shock horror! The singer was different when we got selling England! this put my frind off but I got used to it and bought up all the Gabriel albums, then We can't Dance came out. I went to Germany to see Calling all stations concert, but never got to see the classic line up play ever.
