Yeah there definitely are two progs: the original scene centered around the 70s British bands, and the general worldwide timewide all-inclusive "wierd rock" prog. Some people only like the former and they're allowed to but I think the latter is certainly more progressive in mindset.

That's a silly binary view, since clearly some of us like worldwide "weird rock" but have a noble discriminatory approach towards modern trash.

Alright, there are as many kinds of prog as there are prog listeners. As all these types of prog have exactly the same number of people supporting them- one - they are all as valid as each other. Therefore every act ever suggested goes in without question.
Happy now?

So there is a viewpoint that weird music is more progressive? Hmmm, I guess I get a lot of things about the perception of prog etc now.

Feeding the troll man, it is hard but resist. Honestly, it provides my lulz. Unless walter is 100% sincere and honest, in which case yeah, I think every single post may be a bit excessive.

Synths are as old as Rainbow. In terms of structure too, I didn't hear anything particularly more involved than say something like Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (song) or Orion, unless there was something on that binary digit named album from 2008 which I haven't heard. The lyrical concepts are all that make them different from a stereotypical metal band...which is exactly like Queensryche, like Fates Warning, like Dream Theater. Lyrics don't by themselves make a band prog anyway. Fine, it's your opinion but Ayreon have done nothing of note to progress metal. They are, rightly, called prog metal, which is essentially a metal genre. |
Example - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFVL8--fmws Day Twelve - Trauma Chorus combined with many synths and a lone voice. This section then progressis into a completely different metal part, with growls and organs and guitars coming in. Then comes a verse with a very interesting sort of frequency limited drum sound, which does things like introduce new riffs. Via some crazy synth bridge this goes to a mental synth solo. After repeating this cycle a crazy chord sequence brings us into a COMPLETLY different style. With some kind of pitch percussion and continuing with the strange chord sequences. With a strange interrupted cadence sorta thing this goes into metal mode again. They also have a lot of different "backround" instruments in their piece, whereas Metallica or Iron Maiden will usually just stick to Guitar + Guitar + Bass + Drums + Vocals. That's the main difference between Ayreon and Iron Maiden. They mostly use simple riffs and kinda boring (IMO) chord style things throughout the pieces... wheares Ayreon change instruments, chords and melodies throughout. Well, this IS just an opinion. You can't PROVE something is prog. Also, a lot of people consider some Metallica prog thrash or prog metal - stuff like "The Call of Ktulu" etc.

I haven't read all the thread, but just my thoughts that may have been already said:
Every Prog fan(or Music fan for that matter) has their time, there'll be a time where they will be hooked up with a certain genre or type of bands and then he'll move on to look for some other stuff, it'll either be quick or he can take a long time, but I truly think that a fan of music changes or matures their tastes with time and listens. This doesn't mean that everyone will be listening to the same music once they have reached a certain age, no, that depends on each own's tastes. The point is that everybody "gets sick" or "overloaded" of a certain band or genre for a while and looks for others, then he come back but with "more knowledg" of other genres or bands.

The bright-dark colouring on the riff is as old as Sabbath and evidence can be heard on a fairly recent Sabbath album vis-a-vis Human Equation...Sins of the Father off Dehumanizer. The keyboard usage is nothing that goes much further beyond Moore-DT and the use of a baritone contrasted with female chorus at places is also reminiscent of Operation Mindcrime. Yes, it is sophisticated metal, which is basically what prog metal is. Not prog ROCK.

Sometimes they are. I get annoyed by how punks often praise or criticize a band for their ideals and politics and not even the actual music.
Is there such a thing as a faux prog fan? There are fake punks. But why fake being a proggy? It's not exactly a hip thing to be.

Punk was fake anyway .It wasn't about the music and all about the politics apparently. So a fake punk fan probably enjoys the music itself.

My comment was tongue in cheek. However there was to me fakeness about the idea that you didn't need to be able to play an instrument properly to be in a band.Wrong! It was more about promoting an 'ideal' and having an attitude . The early punk bands were rock n roll with spikey hair and safety pins.
I didn't dislike it though and quite enjoyed The Sex Pistols and other bands of the time for their energy. It was a bandwagon that many jumped on before the more serious and diverse 'new wave' bands emerged. It did succeed in getting really talented people into music like Paul Weller and Elvis Costello but perhaps they would have made it anyway?

Perhaps
But punk was just as much about the idea of kids making their own bands. I saw enough of them.

Giving up to a genre beacuse of ideology or mental closure is a damage that one does to himself, but it's something that happens to everybody at least one time in the life. About punks, the Rock Dynosaur David Gilmour last year has published the Gdansk DVD. What has Johnny Rotten (Lydon) done in the last 10 years?

I stand with Roger Waters, I stand with Joan Baez, I stand with Victor Jara, I stand with Woody Guthrie. Music is revolution
