Finn: Most experts say the difference doesn't exist and that this perception is caused by old people wanting things to be worse today and in the future so they feel better about their own lives and death.

People with this "Everybody is so violent now, the world is going to hell, kids are stupid and useless, things just get worse and worse" attitude should not be teachers. A worrying amount of teachers are like that and I find them to be ineffective as educators even though they genuinely don't know it and will swear to you that that they are making a difference. |
True, some of us believe the culture has changed a bit in some ways that are not exactly positive, but that is a far cry from believing "kids are stupid and useless". Nice stretch.

That has to be the most blatantly "I don't want to deal with the issue" type response I've seen. xD

Well yeah, I am nihilistic about this issue because what you're saying here is "CULTURE IS BAD LET'S CHANGE IT" which is both a ridiculous conclusion and an impossible course of action. Let's improve the world practically through attention to resources and distribution etc and leave the fact that some people have a less restrictive taste in art than you do out of the picture.
Finn: Remember you inviting me to join this discussion? Remember me saying I probably shouldn't? Ah, such simple, innocent times.

I never said change culture. I believe in parenting, not censorship. You seem to have a habit of putting words in other's mouths. I wanted to hear your opinions on the OP on education, since you said you were a teacher. I'm still waiting for those, though given some of the things you've written since, I really am no longer curious.

As I anticipated. I do not share many teacher's sentimentality for their own ideal of the world, nor do I presume to tell future generations what to do with the world. Many teachers think that this is their job, so my opposition on this matter alienates them. How the hell would I know how the world should be anyway? All I have is viewpoints, suppositions and "facts" which can be useful in guiding action, but I haven't got any cure-all "rules" or magic bullets. Students can and will do whatever they please and I should respond to that on their terms if I have any hope of them listening to me. Tell them their culture is trashy, *think* that their culture is trashy, and you are irrelevant.
