Are we just posting my record collection here? I mean look at some of the stuff in this thread - (Jonas Bro Lady Gaga, Madonna, etc EDIT NB These are not in my collection oh except Ray of Light) and then sombody goes and does this! Leave Gong alone! There are surely more annoying bands than Daevid et al.

I didn't realize it was a crime to dislike Gong. Yes, I realize that people have mentioned Lady Gaga, Madonna, and the Jonas Bros, but I realize already that they are not my cup of tea. But as I mentioned, I did give Gong a chance and I just did not enjoy their music. I didn't say they sucked, I just said I couldn't get into their music and I did not understand why they seemed to be one of the more popular bands on the site. Besides, why should I simply repeat what everyone else was saying and name the same bands over again? Relax a little bit akamaison, go get yourself a glass of water.

Man, for me, they are playing the same song since they begun... and yes, I know they discography, my brother has like 10 album of them, especially the old ones... but for me it's like the same song over and over again... and according to you, they have 17 years of doing bad music... it's enough to angers somebody don't you think...??? |
What? 4 albums in 17 years? It's not like they're crapping out dross all the time. And they've been generic since 1993, but they've still put out good songs.
And I really, really don't think you know their discography. Go ahead and say the songs on Achtung Baby and Zooropa are anything like what came before in their catalog. All you need is ears to tell the difference.
|
First: I don't have heard one song of them and then think they are bad... they have been throwing out singles every year and yes, all that songs sounds the same...
Second: if you don't believe I know their discography, that's your problem. You don't live in my house and don't have spend entirely nights hearing them because your brother love them... so, I don't just have heard the singles through the radio and friends, but their albums because of my brother.
Third: I even saw one live DVD from them... and the band sounds OK but Bono is pretentious, and he believes he is a Messiah... his voice is weak and lame... that's my opinion about him as a musician... now, if you like him... whatever... is your problem... I don't and the problem is that I can't scape from all the media attention that they have...
And, I think and most of the fans of U2 always gave me the impression that they really see them with mellancolly, like they really appreciate their teen years and fills like U2 was better... but for whoever stranger to their cathaloge, U2 is always the same... I'm not sure about that, it's about subjective things... but U2 play very pop and weak and that's something that you cannot denied... so... |
I meet your claim that you know their discography with incredulity because you go on to say "U2 is always the same." They are easily, clearly, obviously not if you've heard their Achtung Baby and Zooropa (maybe even bits of Pop). I will grant you that the band since 1997 more or less has been a pretty weak rehashing of 1987, but all I have to do it continue to point to Achtung Baby and Zooropa. Both are dark, brooding, and heavily electronic and Berlin/gothic infuenced. This is kind of what I'm talking about, though. I can see how someone could dislike the grandiosity, pretentiousness, messiah-complex nature of 1980s U2 (and especially Bono), and I can even more see how one could dislike further their post 1997 stuff for the same reasons amplified. The thing is saying the band have always been the same betrays your lack of familiarity with their discography, simply. It's not unexpected, as most who criticize them do it too, much to my irritation, and the reason for my rant. It's easy to criticize those two 1990s albums, by the way, but to be logical about it you have to criticize them for different reasons than the other albums. "Weak mix of electronica and stadium rock," could be one, but not what I would say personally.

I was checking both albums you were talking about... yes, I don't know Zooropa, my brother do not have that one... and I only know a couple of songs of the Achtung Baby... so, you got me there... but well, if you heard 6 previous albums and the four after that, you know that is not my fault that that two particularly in between are better than the whole rest... and I doubt those are evidently better than the rest but I can give them a listen to see if U2 really can make something different... and I will... tonight I will ask my brother for the Achtung Baby and maybe download {post edited} the Zooropa and check them...
Funny thing is that I only distinguish the songs of them by the cover... that similar sounds to me... of course, the sound quality just tell me if a song is from the 80's or 00's... but well... I will check them both... only for you stoney...!!!

Fair enough. Don't worry I know you were just kidding around, as long as you have a passion for your favorite bands, that is all that matters in the end!

If someone could guarantee me that there would be vacancy in Hell with sufficient head-room to accommodate these hair-gel abusers, I will renounce all my worldly vices and take up the priesthood tomorrow. Whitesnake - (it's foolhardy to scale one's appendage to that of the creature it belongs to)

I never liked the hair-metal version of Whitesnake, but was very much into their earlier incarnation - the hard-rock-blues one, which very few people (save Pablo and me, perhaps ) seem to be aware of. Nothing to do with the bunch of posers portrayed above!

I'm partial to the hair metal version of Whitesnake myself, but then again, that is what I grew up on.

You know, the band never managed to crack the US market before they turned hair-metal, and were therefore pretty unknown outside Europe - in spite of having some former Deep Purple members in their ranks (Coverdale, Paice and Lord). Being familiar with the original versions of "Here I Go Again" and "Crying in the Rain", I cannot say I'm a big fan of what they did in order to make them more palatable for the US market. Moreover, Coverdale all but shot his voice to hell in trying to imitate Robert Plant, who has a completely different range.

I supose Uriah Heep after David Byron, mostly because I love the band in the Byron years, after that its utterly crap and a total embarrasment
I could mention bands like U2, Rem and so on but luckily since I dont work in a place with comercial radio blasted out the entrie days, they are dead to me
Bono seem to be comming back as a ghost though

It's not something I wish to think about any longer. It doesn't matter as much as it once did. But since I've had a few drinks , I will now reveal my anger and the bands that bring it all about. When I meet someone who is 30 years younger than me, or 10 or 20 years younger, or my age group, or much older, and they approach me like I'm a wax museum figure that grew up in the dinosaur pea brain generation of rock, it tends to get me angry. They start naming a entire host of bands that supposedly hail from my generation that I still to a large degree find offensive.
Grand Funk Railroad
Mountain
BTO
Foghat When I was a mere teenager and these bands first hit the music scene, I hated them. To me their sound was artificial. The nerve of Foghat trying to cover an old Chuck Berry tune and cranking up their ugly guitar sounds made me want to vomit. I grew up listening to Peter Green and Mike Bloomfield who had a beautiful distorted rock guitar sound. Foghat's guitar sound was like rum gasoline fizz. Grand Funk Railroad's was spam olivaria. Mountain was like a side order of blatter puffs and BTO was the disease of the day. Like an atrocity cookie that was pulled out of a bag by a big hairy hand. I could see the chocolate chips on it, like the bulging eyes of a blind fish......that was hit by a mack truck and left on the highway. Certain memories never go away. I held out both hands and the cookie seemed heavy and big for a cookie. But I put it in my mouth........and the wave of chocolate goodness formed up around my gums, receding like a dead sea tide.....Then came the surprise....Four tiny razor sharp tips that latched into the roofs and bottoms of my mouth. My friends were smilin".....Harder then I'd ever see them smile before or since, while my Mom stuck that bath towel in my mouth and called for that ambulance. Well, Madhorse Farms remembers. Cause we been makin' atrocity cookies for over 5 milliennium. Don't forget our cinnammon flavored razor ribbon cluster cookies. Come back to the painful memories of youth. Comeback to Madhorse Farms. And there are good. There good because there are dead. You can smell the goodness before you choke on it. That's because Madhorse Farms remembers the plaque of Athens. Even if you don't.

I agree with many of the above mentioned. Except while I don't like the popular era of GFR I love the Red album. Thats just three piece jamming to the max.

Harmonium. It's not bad, and I'd say Depuis L'automne was good in points, but all I can remember of that Histoire Sans Paroles was booooooredom. I've been wrong before, though- upon first listen to Per un Amico, I thought it was massively overrated, and now it's a top 10 ever album for me. However, as of now, I just CANNOT understand how 1) Si On Avait is in the top 15 and 2) it's above Hybris

U2 were actually OK before and up to the Achtung Baby era. After that, they've been a shadow of their former selves. The guys made three albums in the 2000s, and yet they still have millions of dollars. It doesn't take years to make a record. If you're into your music, it takes a few months! Glad I'm not a big GnR fan. 16 years wait and dozens of lineup changes between records!

I've never heard "Pop" in it's entirety but Discotheque, Staring At The Sun, Mofo, If God Will Send His Angels and Last Night On Earth were excellent. I liked a couple of tracks from the next album too.

Well, OK, they've released a few standout songs since Achtung. But overall, their post 1990s output has been pretty bland and creatively lazy. They're one of those bands who probably would have been better if they'd stayed underground and not become massive.
