Eyedea's tragic, sudden death has put me in mind to remember two other fallen hip-hop greats. No not the over tributed Pac and Biggie but Big Pun and Big L.

First up is Lamont "Big L" Coleman, who was a well above average MC and punchline king whose 1995 album (the only material released in his lifetime) released when he was just 21 features a wealth of clever, fresh lyrics. Here's the single, Put It On.

Big L died shortly before completing his second album. In 1999 he was found dead in Harlem having been shot nine times. His murder and the reason for it have never been satisfactorily explained and no one was ever convicted. Spookily, in 2002 L's brother Leroy decided to solve the murder himself and began poking around. He turned up murdered, similarly mysteriously, in the same place.

The other guy I wanted to spotlight is Big Pun.

Christopher "Big Punisher" Rios was the first commercially significant Latin rapper. Latinos had been involved in hip-hop since the beginning, primarily as dancers. They did MC but for whatever reason did not get much recognition bar a few minor stars like Kid Frost. Pun was the first to go supernova with his 1998 album Capital Punishment.

Rios was morbidly obese, weighing 700 lbs a the time of his death, unsurprisingly from heart attack in 2000, aged just 28. But his rap style was just the opposite of his ungainly bulk. He was fast, fluid, witty and his flow was absolutely impeccable, as crisp and clear as you please while his multisyllabic rhymes rattled on effortlessly.

Both guys worth remembering.

And of course, Jam Master Jay forever.

Anyone heard the new Kanye West album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy?

Is getting HUGE buzz and rave reviews, looking like it's going to end up being considered album of the year by a few people.

Interesting because after the distinctly crappy 808s And Heartbreak, a lot of people, including me, had written him off.

But this actually appears to be quite a progressive album and I don't just mean the King Crimson sample on Power- it's genuinely adventurous. Bon Iver on two songs anyone?

I'll be getting a copy soon and probably letting you know what I think...

I don't appreciate this kind of music very much.But I want you to listen to a band that is a good option for you.The band is called Twiztid and they are horror hip-hop.Here's a song from the album The green book:

Here's the rap albums I currently own:

Wu-Tang Clan - Enter the Wu-Tang (5 star masterpiece)
Wu-Tang Clan - Iron Flag (Good album)
Wu-Tang Clan - 8 Diagrams (I don't like this one very much)
Wyclef Jean - The Carnival (5 star masterpiece)
Ghostface Killah - Ironman (Good album)
Fugees - The Score (I've only heard it once, but I already love it)

J-Man: Outkast's first four albums (Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik, ATLiens, Aquemini, Stankonia) and the album by their crew, The Dungeon Family, Even In Darkness, are all required.

In terms of new stuff, I'm currently listening to this dude from Boston called Moe Pope, I like it.

Also digging this producer called Factor, gotta love the keys on this track, very proggy,

that big pun and big l stuff was killer im gonna check em out. Kanye's albums pretty much convinced me of his skill. his last one was totally unmemorable but this is a return to form. Really enjoy it, though im not ready to give it album of the year cred yet.

I extremely enjoy (not just little bit, but it's long time love) Gorillaz - Demon Days. What is so different about them ? Why I can listen their music, even I don't like "traditional" hip-hop, what musical characteristic they have ?

I would like to find out :-D or perhaps get some recommendations from you guys for similar music.

Probably something like M.I.A ~ very eclectic, east meets west - a Britpop hip-hop electroclash reggae - about the closest thing there is to Damon Albran's take on hip-hop, but a bit more "real".

Tinie Tempah (he's very mainstream, but I detect a prog influence in his music, certainly more musical than most hip-hop artists).

And for the middle-aged (like me) no collection is complete without Faithless - Maxi Jazz's rap lyrica over Sister Bliss and Rolo's trip-hop and trance techno musica hita all the right notes.
