Just another interesting thought. I recently shared my thoughts with Roj about Monsters & Men but just the other day another great song came to mind: Big Puzzle. Just have another listen to the part from 2:10 till 6:10. These must be amongst the best composed and executed minutes of music in history. How can anyone invent such brilliant stuff ? Only a genius I guess. One of the many reasons I'm in love with this band. Anyone that feels the same way about this song ?

There's just one thing I do not completely agree with. Contrary to you I don't dislike Yes. But I do very well understand what you mean. I think Yes just made a (very) few very good songs during their large discography. To me those are the incredible Gates of Delirium and Close to the Edge. And I can only add  Awaken, Yours is no disgrace, Starship Trooper and And you and I to them as very good songs.
The rest I don't really care about in fact. And then to think that many people dare to maintain that TFK is just a Yes-rip off band. I get so angry when I read such stupid nonsense AngryAngryAngry. All facts considered Yes gets nowhere near TFK in my opinion. I'd better watch out now or it will be Censored.

I really like these talks about TFK compared to the ultimate greats on PA. I wanted to do this for a long time ! Thanks guys

Thanks PR,

And it's not that I dislike them, I just have a similar stance towards them as you do with Genesis, utmost respect, just can't really get into them and think they're over rated.  Though I'm creating a playlist with the songs that you recommend, well everything except Awaken.  I don't seem to have that song, which album if you know off the top of your head?

My very first FK impression was that they were a Yes imitator, the first CD that I picked up by them was Retropolis with the very Yeslike "There is More to this World".  That didn't bother me cause I still enjoyed the song, enough to explore more.  I picked up Stardust next and it was history from there.

I would hardly call them a Yes rip-off, frankly, I think they're far better.  On a musician by musician basis, the only Yes member that I'd take is Rick Wakeman.  I prefer Stolt over Howe.

I like the Stolt / Froeberg combination better than Anderson on vocals.  I know this one would be unpopular but I think Anderson's voice is a little too pristine.  Very beautiful and clear though not quite as gritty as I'd like.

I don't care for their rhythm section, Squire and Bruford don't strike me as a rhythm section as much as competing soloists.  Even if I did like Chris Squire's style, Jonas Reingold blows him away from pure feel.  The last couple of minutes in 'The Devil's Playground' is some of the most compelling bass work that I've heard in quite a while.

Wakeman is fantastic, Bodin is great as well, I just think that Rick Wakeman wins on that one.

In all fairness, the Genesis comparison...give me Banks, Collins, Gabriel, Reingold and Stolt.

Gotta run or I'd probably keep going...

Peace

Guys! Karmakanic's Who's the Boss in the Factory? arrived today, and it's fantastic!!!!!!

Highly recomended for all of you here. A mix of the dark mood and chords of The Tangent and TFK's stunning melody and epicness.

I don't know, but there's something I don't like about The Flower Kings. Sometimes they rock, but other times they get into cheesy stuff that almost sounds like a parody of prog-rock.

You say :Even if I did like Chris Squire's style, Jonas Reingold blows him away from pure feel.
I say : These are two of my favorite bassplayers,They both have great feel, they both have great tones, they both are masters of their own style ,and its silly to think one is better than the other Clap

I love Big Puzzle Smile

To me it's one of TFK's very best tracks and the section you mention is just pure prog glory and right up there with anythingthat Yes or Genesis have produced (and I grew up with those bands).

I'm currently listening to "Theme For A Hero" and it's glorious. This band should be massive.

Spot on post once more ! You have the gift to make every word count. I don't think the qualification newbie suits you, dude. Just keep sending in the posts (especially on this great thread Big smile) and you'll be a groupie and senior in no time.

Theme for a hero is indeed one of those excellent instrumentals they made. Wonderful melody !

Right now I'm playing Paradox Hotel as a whole, a thing I rarely do because it's actually an inconsistent album. A thing that Roine Stolt admitted himself by the way in an interview I read. Some fantastic songs (of course M&M, Touch my Heaven, Life will kill you, Minor Giant Steps and End on a high note), a few good ones but also quite a few sloppy songs. Because of the monstrous Tongue track I had to give this doubler the full score though. Sometimes I regret it, sometimes I don't.

By the way, if anyone likes Life will kill you I strongly recommend Roine's solo effort Wallstreet Voodoo.
It's full of the same wahwah you hear on Lwky. Great versatile double album by Roine.

I suggest you do the review then my friend. And please bring in another 5 starrating for it. I'm getting sick and tired of all those prog reviewers saying it's such a great album and still give it 4 (ONLY 4 that is) !!  Angry

The average rating is way too low for this masterpiece.

I might be a newbie on here but I'm a right old fart on the Genesis and Spock's Beard forums LOL

Thanks for your kind words though and I look forward to plenty more TFK chat in this thread for months to come.

Have a look at how long the TFK threads have been going on the Genesis forums Wink

Hi guys.

For me it was always Floyd and Yes, followed by Genesis and IQ.  I never expected a new band to dislodge them, but TFK have done so, big time!!

TFK have been such an incredible discovery for me and have changed my musical life.  Just last year I'd never even heard of them, now they are my number 1. Had it not been for a buddy recommending PA I could've gone through my life without ever hearing TFK; a truly shocking thought.

Now for me it's:-

1.  TFK
2.  Floyd / Yes (equal)
3.  Genesis
4.  IQ

IQ are VERY close behind Genesis, however if the rest of their new album is as good as the 3 tracks from it I already know, they may pull leve with Genesis.

Always, always a great pleasure to talk on this thread.

Roj,

Here's an IQ question for you.  Do you think that they're a bit too repetitive?

For a brief period they were higher on my list of favorites, probably number 3, then I picked up Ever.  Don't get me wrong, it's a great album, but I already had both Subterrerea and 7th House.  I found the three albums to share a lot of themes to the point that it got to be repetitive.  I know that Ever was released before the other two, but I picked them up in the opposite order of their release.  By the time I finally got Ever, I was intimately familiar with Subterrerea.

Try singing the end of 'The Narrow Margin' to the music of 'Came Down'  If you stretched a little you could combing the end of 'Guiding Light' as well.

I still love the band, they're just not as shiny as they once were, though I am hopeful that the new keyboard player will add some new life.

Hi Tom, and apologies for the delay.  Hope you and the family are well.  I think I follow your drift, although as IQ are a band that have stuck to what they do best, this may explain a few similarities.  One difference, I love Narrow Margin and dislike Came Down!!  The end of Guiding Light is different though, it's a reprise of 7th House.

You know, I find Ever to be their weakest album with Nicholls on vocals, it's not a patch on T7H and Sub.  I'm right with you on that.

I saw IQ late 2008, and they played a few from their upcoming album, Frequency.  I bought a couple of tour cds with a few of the tracks on it.  The title track is great, but one, Stronger Than Friction is absolutely out of this world!!  I can't wait for that album.

So many extra posts on this thread over the weekend!  I'll post fully later.

Roj.

Wow!!  So many posts this weekend ClapClapClap to all of you.

My take:

Who's The Boss In The Factory - awesome album, and one to tide us over until the next FK release. Send A Message To The Heart is simply stunning, for me the best track from 2008 by a mile.  It's a 4.5 star album for me, but as it's Jonas, we'll round up to 5 Wink.

Regarding Big Puzzle, that's a great great song but not my favourite on that (amazing) album.  The aforementioned Theme For A Hero always gets me, the ending in particular is brilliant.  And as for the title track, what can I say, goosebump city, Arizona!!

Yes/Genesis etc.  Love both those bands.  Tom, for Awaken, you need Going For The One, their best album.  Awaken is actually my favourite Yes piece, and probably my favourite track of all-time.  It is an incredible, emotional slice of symphonic prog, and sums up what I like about this wonderful music.  Whilst both these bands produced some great albums, I think FK have made more special albums.  I have 8, and all 8 are brilliant, the lowest rating I would give for any is 4 stars, and I can't say that for Genesis or Yes, who've both released a few "duffers"

Henk, I'm gonna try for a FK Top 25 (or 50?) as my next post!!

Glad you like it Pablo, it makes a change for me to recommend one for you Wink.

I'd rate it as a 4.5 myself, but the first track is simply wonderful so I'd round up to 5, when I get the chance to post a review Stern Smile.

Glad you're back here!

I have it since Saturday, and already spinned it like 7 times!! Send a Message from the Heart is really good, but my fave tracks are the title track and Two Blocks from the Edge, while less 'epic', they're more of my style.Wink

I do love some of the songs (especially Send a Message from the Heart) but I simply can't give it 5 stars. It isn't a "masterpiece" of prog nor is it "essential." I don't think it should ever go below 4 stars.
Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal.

This is the thread you'll find me most often Tongue.

I actually listened to Who's The Boss today too.  To be honest I love it all.  My fave is probably Send A Message, but there's not a bad one on it.  Title track and Two Blocks are indeed tremendous.  The instrumental break in the title track is really special.  Great album, and my favourite of '08 by a mile.

At the moment I'm loving the track Retropolis.  Whilst the album overall isn't one of TFK's best, the title track certainly is.  An absolutely stunning instrumental, and I'm sure you like the guitar work on that one Pablo.

Cheers all.

Ok you're the man Roy Clap. I'm disappointed in The Captain and Cacho though Cry. Goodness me, how good does an album have to get for a masterpiece status ?????  Cacho do you really believe Triumvirat is a better album than Karmakanic ? I saw you gave that one 5 stars. Illusions on a double dimple is a good album but at least a star less than Who's the Boss. But of course we get back to the old discussion then about matter of taste which is undiscussable of course. Still, too bad but I respect your decision. I have to, alas.
