Dear Mike, I understand you well. These Interactive Polls have become increasingly challenging, considering proposed songs and alternative choices. Initially I have thought of a single song, with a maximum of 15 participants. But then there was enthusiasm, a desire to do, to propose, to listen, and to comment, and the commitment became increasingly burdensome. Myself some weeks like July and August and even the last three, I struggled to find the time to participate and listen to all the songs, not to mention the time to comment. Since there are these polls I have sacrificed a lot of my participation in other sections of the forum and have less time for reviews. The talent scout work you do for the site is precious, you are a discoverer of new prog, and I understand that you cannot sacrifice it to do these polls which, by the way, are not about prog. Anyway, when you want to come back, do it freely, when you have two weeks more free than usual, you could come back here and join a poll, a bit like taking a two week vacation, and then go back to doing prog (or doing both things together). We don't have to participate in every round of the Poll, we can come here when we want to get distracted, and then let it go for a while. |

Maybe that's why Warner Brothers provided the actual YouTube clip

That song also reminds me of how much I hate laugh tracks. |

This should never be a burden, and the level of participation will vary. Of course it was stretched to two weeks to try to make it easier on people, but that still can be too time-consuming. I do hope we get some more of those post just one track polls like the first, because that is easier to get ahead in one's listening and there is less to have to listen to (especially if the length is kept minimal). Mind you, I am loving the duos. Hopefully you'll be back Mike if you have free time in the future. Of course one doesn't need to post commentary, other than posting one's three votes, then there's thinking of a nomination (my problem is I generally think of several and often feel unsure), but just the listening does take time, it always requires a few spins from me, and one is not always in the mood. I didn't participate in a few rounds and once or twice I was busy and didn't vote. I do think this is the greatest series and poll idea I've seen at PA during all my years here and would hate to see many people burning out. Since I rarely post in the politics thread, this is generally the most interesting topic (or entertaining) to me at the board (with politics I listen and read more than I like to write about it -- can feel like work writing about it, and this beats any of my cod philosophising). I always enjoy your entries, Mike, but also understand the need to take a break from time to time from anything! Even enjoyable things, today instead of listening so much, I took time out for myself to read and play harp, it's good to "cleanse the palate," from time to time. I hope sometime you'll come back!

Does it count as laugh tracks when it's the actual audience from a concert performance?

Not for me, that's spontaneous laughter....it's when they add a canned laugh track to somehow let you know you're supposed to laugh there (I guess?) that I find it irritating...thinking television.

Sure it is irritating. I mostly associate it with sitcoms and things like that.

Out of competition:
The Mission: Like a Hurricane (song by Neil Young). This is a wonderful decadent, gothic, dark version. Original version: Edited by jamesbaldwin - February 07 2021 at 18:51 |

Comment on the next batch. Snicolette Because of some mistake I made, the text I just wrote about the tracks disappeared, and now I don't remember the wording. In any case, I really like the song. Very restrained and laid-back. Quite melancholic too. The two versions aren't worlds apart, but the Eliza Gilkyson version is more americana, for instance with the guitar solo after 3:00. Interesting lyrics about the history of mankind. mathman0806 The original wording got lost here too. What is it with this poll and Black Sabbath and Ozzy? "War Pigs" is of course not new to me, and it is one of the Black Sabbath songs I actually like. My favourite part probably being the breaks with the hi-hat and Ozzy singing the verses. As for the brass version, I am unsure if the brass instruments really fit the atmosphere of the song. No comments on the MetalTrump version. Lewian Here's yet another song I know from front to back. It's a truely mindblowing piece of music (and literally so, considering the conditions under which it was written). I can still remember my reaction when I first heard it as a 9-10 year old boy, basically: What the heck was that? And it's the closing track on one of my all time favourite albums. The Andrade cover version is very different, and a big kudos to this artist for actually trying it. She makes it entirely her own and takes it to a completely different area. It's otherworldly beautiful. Great cover. Steve Hackett's Spectral Mornings: I like the melody and chord changes in this, sound-wise I think it's a bit too polished for my taste. mathman0806 (part 2) Beyoncé ft. Kendrick Lamar - "Freedom" has a sort of "retro soul" feel to it. I like the organ a lot. Doesn't sound like something I would normally associate with Beyoncé. I actually really like the song. RATM is a band I got pretty tired of in my early youth, but I quite like this recording, especially the guitar riffs. Not so sure about what to think of the vocals. And then there is Brass Against again. This time around I think it works a lot better than with Black Sabbath, especially with the breaks.

Thanks Nickie, as always! Yes, Shaka Ponk is quite heavy, but in their live performances they're so contagious with their musicality, their enthousiasm and their versatility that it always makes a great experience... @ Mike: Chime in whenever you can. Thanks to you I discovered some interesting music, so I hope you will find some moments to participate again! And there is no obligation whatsoever to contribute all the time on an internet forum, neither to apologize for not participating (except for the admins... whooohahaha *demonic laughter*).
