dude.. I was Butthead before Butthead was Butthead... a mere glint in Mike Judges eye... and yeah.. I love cats.. more than people to be honest.. but I do see visions of Stewart every time you post. you really should bag that pic for your avatar. question is though.. who is Daria... man she was smokin hot in that way that geeky girls can be. Ompha???

you'd be surpirsed babe... some of my best friends have been some whose political views differ mightily from mine. The internet is sort of funny that way... we tend to focus more on what we don't agree on rather than what we do. Agreement is boring.. disagreement is fun as far as the internet goes. The best days of this site were not when we were all buddies but when we were sticking knives in each others's back and shooting down innocent posters. In real life though.. we are real people.. we haven't forgotten what is to be different and have different opinions on things. Make it up to D.C some time and look me up... I bet we'd get on like a house on fire.

This thread exemplifies why I enjoy PA so much!! I'm learning quite a bit and am inspired to listen to music I've never heard before.
Negative posts don't bother me, I've advocated for plenty of crap bands on PA! Hell, I even like some disco!! |

The argument that listener gives meaning to music sounds like the old argument that the moon does not come into being unless observed! The music is physical sound and yes sound has no Meaning...once you get into subjective analysis of anything you may as well start hearding cats...

I like Camel a lot. But it is very mellow and I can see a lot of mums and grannies liking parts of the snow goose...The avant dudes want mom to HATE what they dig...thats what gives it meaning...

I believe you with the Butthead thing. As for the Stewart comparison/visions, I'm not one, that's why I found the whole thing with "Stewart wearing a Marillion T-shirt" funny. BTW, there's an episode where they pull off a "It's a Wonderful World" story with what would've happened if Beavis had never met Butthead. Well, Beavis was a good kid (like Stewart), and was wearing a Bon Jovi T-shirt. It was so funny, I'd love to watch that episode again sometime soon.

I'm surprised to hear a prog fan say that. I like some ABBA but I don't consider them disco.

Isn't ABBA on every pop disc jockeys playlist? If ABBA isn't disco then nothing is...

I don't know whether that refers to my earlier posting, but if it does, it misses the point. The category "boring" refers explicitly to the feelings of the listener, not the properties of the music, so "boring" is in a stronger and clearer way subjective than for example "generic" or "simplistic" or "innovative". I'm not claiming that the latter ones are 100% objective but at least they refer to something we think of as being a property of the music itself rather than the listener.

Re negativity: presdoug wrote something negative about Can and got an answer that made him question his assessment and probably give Can another chance. So something positive can come out of negative comments (of course presdoug may very well give Can another chance and then regret it, but still...). On the other hand I cannot see much positive coming out of "what you love is actually sh*t" comments. Edited by Lewian - November 28 2018 at 05:43 |

I like quite a bit of Camel, you're either playing a character well or you really have some butthurt for the avant heads. What we really want is the symph weenies to hate it otherwise it has no value.

Nahhhh ... But the film THE ADVENTURES OF PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT ... is one of the fun films to watch ... and crazy as all heck. (... wait ... my ____ have fallen off!) Before that why would I listen to ABBA when I had AD2, CAN, TANGERINE DREAM, KLAUS SCHULZE, COSMIC COURIERS, POPOL VUH, ASH RA TEMPEL ... and such a list of German folks that made ABBA not sound specially good for my ears. Even the ladies looked rather ... cardboard and too much makeup for my tastes! Disco or not!

Travelling around the world, and specially EUROPE, the one thing that you learn quickly is that there is different music, different arts, different films, and so much of anything else that it is impossible not to notice. Only in a place like AMERICA, is so much of it ignored, since the media is not interested and schools have stopped teaching liberal arts, because they tend to ditch some groups of politicians real quick. But, you know, none of these poliegos, ever learned one of the greatest truths/lies I have ever heard, and it was a guy that became president and he was a Republican! He said LOUD AND CLEAR ... let them smoke dope, and I will win all the elections! Almost 50 years later, that line seems ... weird, generic and boring, but I see a lot of folks around me smoking this and that and complaining about a lot of things, and none of them vote. I wonder if that guy was a PROPHET for some sort of religion ... ? It's almost the same thing here ... we're blinded by the light of publicity, and the only way we can explain our tastes is with "favorites" ... since most of the comments do not add a single bit of anything that would show any kind of musicianship of note and value ... ohhhh pardon me ... excuse me .... a church organ or a colored guitar, or a dressed up singer in a paper mache kid mask ... became known as "progressive" and later "prog". We still have not learned and continue to be blinded by the light ... of illusion!

Perhaps not but it's always good for some butthurt and the resulting entertainment.

I agree that the listener does not give meaning to music, but do think that each listener hears it differently, not just sonically and not even in the sense of memories associated with it, swaying one's opinion. Like no reader reads the same book, because of life experience, education, knowledge, exposure, temperament and all of the other factors that create an individual, so I find it the same for music. I know that playing an instrument will give you a whole new take on hearing others play the same instrument and even can cause interplay with muscle memory (not talking air guitar here), in a way that hearing that music before you played it certainly did not. I know from reading books of different eras, as I've revisited them again with further knowledge of the history of the times, the culture of the author, the references within them that I was previously unaware of, have made me understand a book more deeply. Same for paintings (especially for me, the Pre-Raphaelites), there is a whole language of visual art, that deepens the experience. So yes, for me at least, I think I hear music my own particular way and even that is subject to change. Expand your horizons, explore, return to something again that maybe you tossed aside in the past, your taste buds can change. Unless you're talking okra. The only vegetable I ever met that I don't like. |

^ I think that the listener does bring an individual flavor to music but that there is also some kind of universality involved. There's way too many people agreeing on what's a good album of a particular prog artist and what's not.

You could explain this without making reference to the actual music just by random variation, social processes including marketing and selectivity of the people whose opinions you know. If you look elsewhere I bet you find lots of people who have a ranking of for example Genesis or Yes albums that will look totally upside down for the people on this board. I have worked on data about music perception including taste as a statistical advisor and really that's the most chaotic data I have ever come across (and I've seen quite a bit of data from various fields). The amount of agreement between people when it comes to musical taste and perception is strikingly low. Personally I'd probably agree with you that there should be something more to it than random variation and social processes, but believe me it is very hard if not impossible to find it by empirical research.
