Can’t be. They’re Swedish (European). If not Asian, Australian?

Oh right, I missed that he said it was not European.

Hmm, South/Central American?

Possibly. He made an edit to clarify 'merican, to distinguish the United States from the continents. There are a lot of symph bands from south/central america though and not many from Canada.

But the question was American (including North, Central and South America), not merican.

This is a continual source of confusion (and friction) across the Atlantic. In the United States, the word "American" means "from the United States of America" the same way Mexican means "from the United States of Mexico (that country's official name)" All countries go by the last part of there name, so Norway is "Norway" not "The Kingdom."

If we want to refer to someone from North America, we say "North American," if we want to say someone from South America we say "South American." There is no term from someone from both continents, but sometimes we can say "from the Americas."

Through a lengthy series of online debates on this topic, I came to understand that in Europe, the two continents are generally not thought of as separate, and the term "American" is used to apply to both, either separately or together.

It's difficult to carry on a conversation across international lines on this topic, because we insist that American refers to people from the United States of America and you insist that it refers to anyone from both continents. It would be like trying to talk to a Brit about chips if they refused to acknowledge our definition of the word and we refused to acknowledge theirs.

It's all very messy, but I still think the American way makes more sense and has greater clarity. Different words for different countries/continents.

^Ok. But if I say/write "North America", what countries would it include? Surely Canada, USA and Mexico, but what about the Caribbean?

Central America is technically part of North America, and I believe most of the islands in the Caribbean are as well, with the exception of Trinidad, I think.

EDiT: I was wrong, Trinidad is classified as being North American as well. The wikipedia article is consistent with my understanding of the term.
