got another email. Yep, it's the original 4 Asia guys. The Sole Survivors. the Don't Cry Gang. The smile has not left their eyes. We fight for king and country.
Makes sense now. 2 of those guys tour with YES, and my friend worked on their tour last summer, thus the VIP treatment. Edited by HolyMoly - November 15 2012 at 13:18 |

Their last 2 albums were also with the 4 original guys. All of the inbetween albums were with Geoff Downes and John Payne, with the other 2 guys changing from album to album.

Maybe I should give those new things a listen. How are they, pretty good?

I enjoy them quite a bit, but I am sure that they don't meet the prog standards that most prog fans would hope to hear with this lineup.

Prog, Schmog. This is Asia. I've never really expected prog from them anyway.
I hope they play "Go". Remember that tune? It was sorta kinda a hit. Or at least there was a sticker featuring it on the original album cover. ("Features the Hit Single "Go") |

That is good. I always feel that I have to qualify that here though, since many PAers seem to hate Asia because they don't sound like King Crimson or Relayer era Yes.

I've never had a problem with Asia. They were part of my life long before I gave a crap about "prog". As they started losing their original members, I saw less and less reason to keep up with them, and they eventually just fell off my radar. But I never felt any ill will towards them.

I think that a few of the Geoff Downes/John Payne albums are quite good too. Aura and Silent Nation. Actually, the last 3 albums are from the original members. Phoenix, Omega, and XXX.

http://pop-break.com/2011/09/08/interview-geoff-downes-of-yes/ PB: The Guinness Book of Records had you as having the most keyboards on one stage. How did that come about — having so many keyboards in one console? GD: I was collecting them at the time, and the guy that built the first Asia stage built this podium to house the keyboards. It was so big, I thought I better fill it up with some stuff. I ended up with 28 in one gig. I think it was an Asia MTV special in Japan in 1983. I did actually every single one during the course of the show. A few bars on each one. the Buggels is also the first band to be played on MTV, his song Video Killed the Radio Star, 1st song to ever be played on MTV PB: Is it an honor to be part of the trivia question, ‘Who was the first band on MTV?’ Or has that been annoying throughout the years? GD: It’s something I’m quite proud of actually. It does come up in trivia quite a bit. It is quite an honor to have your music starting the very first channel that made such an impact all across the world. You have MTV Europe, MTV Asia. I don’t think it has much to do with music these days — it’s kind of morphed into the reality-culture television. For better or worse, that’s the way it’s gone. But it was an exciting time those first four or five years. |
