I've been neglecting this for too long and there's already a big backlog of bands I wish I could put into this update but I am sure I will forget some... The following bands are from various musical genres and styles and so you can pick your prefered style: No Use For Humans is a band I just came to know through a recommendation of a friend over at Progressive Ears (thanks, Eric!). They play a varied and eclectic form of experimental/avant/progressive rock with touches of electronics thrown in for good measure. Well done, though still in its early stages, this is a band to look after. I've ordered their two releases (they also have a demo release) from CD Baby. http://www.myspace.com/nouseforhumans http://www.nouseforhumans.com/ Svartbag is a Danish trio of musicians making hypnotic, repetitive soundscapes that may be compared to a more electronic and richer sounding Circle, Andexelt-era. They released a s/t album this year through Rump Recordings, bearing characteristics of experimental and ambient music, with a good dosage of electronics and sampling. Very well done! http://www.myspace.com/svartbag The Japanese experime(n)tal/progressive/experimental-rock band Birushanah from Osaka is also a recommendation from the above mentioned Eric (thanks again). I've got both their albums on order as the Myspace samples were very promising. Have a listen: http://www.myspace.com/birushanah http://www.kagura-enterprise.com/birushanah/ Colin Marston (Behold the Arctopus, Dysrhythmia) is at it again with Indricothere, an exhaustingly energetic bomb of death-metal/grind which redefines the word relentless. I just received this album from Gilead Media; it comes as a combined LP/CD package for a mere 10$ (if I recall correctly). http://www.myspace.com/indricothere Austrian band Tupolev is a band whose 2008 album, Memories Of Björn Bolssen, I reviewed for Sonic Frontiers.net and posted it here in my Myspace blog as well some weeks back (http://www.sonicfrontiers.net/php/review_218). Mixing styles and influences, this current foursome plays jazzy and ambient styled music, incorporating some electronics and electro-acoustics into it, culminating in a fascinating sound.
http://www.myspace.com/tupolev That is all I have time for now. I'll try and continue this next weekend hopefully. |

I recommend the "Mutant Guitarist"...Kevin Bartlett. John Diliberto of Echoes stuck that label on him after the release of Bartlett's latest album, "Glow in the Dark." It was apparently how Echoes justified playing such a heavily prog-influenced artist.
Bartlett's guitar work is remarkable - soaring, ear-bending and some of the most-emotionally expressive playing you're every likely to hear. If you like intricate orchestration, surprising rhythm and melodies that grab you by the aorta, listen. http://www.cdbaby.com/kevinbartlett2 |

I am surprised that the Polish neo prog band "After" have not been added to the PA pages.
Two albums that are top quality:
Endless Lunatic (2005)
Hideout (2008)
With the wealth of Polish prog to choose from, I'm positive that there would be readers of these hallowed pages that would appreciate listening to their music.

Daniel Johnston - Songs of Pain
It sucks that I just found out about this guy because he RULES! Not so much prog, but I think the prog community would greatly appreciate him. His interviews and art interests me almost as much as his music. |

Svartbag - s/t (2008)
Danish trio Svartbag (Danish for “gull”) was formed in 2002 and has created music that incorporates the raw essence of rock with the hypnotic-like effect of electronics. The trio consists of the two guitarists, Niels Ladefoged and A.REX who also handle samplers and electronics and the third member, Peter Kyed who is in charge of electronics and real sound samplings. In this album they are reinforced on 4 of the tracks by the presence of drummer Andreas Hauer-Jensen.
Taking its influences from krautrock, psychedelic-rock, shoegaze and minimalism, Svartbag present an intriguing view of their musical vision: dark and gripping rich-sounding repetitive tunes, pleasant yet eerie; on a mission to isolate the listener from its environment and surround him with powerful and controlling patterns and sounds. Svartbag’s Myspace offers this fitting description of the album: “Svartbag’s music can best be described as sonic drones, analogue noise and repetitive space-rock with a touch of ambient and electronica.” There is not much wait, no slow buildup; rather it faces you head on (though not in a bombastic or overly aggressive way) and steals you away from your reality into their musical scenery. It is in fact epic-like, not in length but in scope, in what they achieve with their five compositions, which is a haunting atmosphere, a compelling entourage of sounds. The richness of sound, the flow of each track, the well played and composed tunes, the rhythms and varying moods and influences all sum up synergistically to a fabulous listening experience; one that makes me eager to listen to it again and again. When talking about the magic in music, that something indescribable that grabs you and takes you away from your physical self, this is to me that kind of music. Svartbag is one of those albums that caught me from first listen. It’s refreshingly well-done and well-balanced. A highly enjoyable and recommended release. |

I've been listening a lot to the track "Terrapin Station" by the Grateful Dead from the album of the same name for the first time since about the time it was initially released back in 1977.
I have to say that this is quite an impressive work. It is a side long cut from that album that progresses through several nicely related themes from start to finish. The sound is pure Grateful Dead, but it clearly borrows ideas from various prog groups of the time as well as symphonic elements including nice orchestral and choral accents towards the end. Now clearly the Grateful Dead were not a prog band by any stretch, yet they were highly experimental and very talented musicians. Garcia and Robert Hunter are reknowned composers to many as well. But "Terrapin Station" is clearly the Dead's attempt at something that is indeed essentially progressive rock through and through. My impression is that this may well stand up in regards to artistic merit with some of the best progressive rock opuses of the time. It compares favorably to the likes of Suppers Ready, Nine Feet Underground, Gates Of Delirium, Eruption, and Thick As a Brick. My recollection of the piece from back then stood in my mind as something uniquely unlike the norm for the Dead and more like many other progressive rock classics of the time. I think the ommision of this particular work on this site for general review to date is a major one. Wondering what others think? |

Sorry if this is a repeat, but I would recommend the band Touchstone with the album Discordant Dreams. Probably falls into the NeoProg or Crossover classification. From the UK with shared male/female lead vocals. Kim Seviour as the female lead really kicks it. Think it would be a good additon to the Prog Archives.
