Well, the cloest thing to Gentle Giant is Echolyn.
Also, i know you're working your way out of normal music and into prog so it seems really awesome that there are such long songs but some of the most epic music comes in the form of shorter songs that are on albums that are epic.
And if you're jsut getting off the modern music kick, Enditol is pretty amazing. As is Opeth.

See, I'm coming from classic rock and modern rock which is crap to me now. Once I heard Dream theater and The Mars Volta, I knew modern rock was awful. Mike showed me Yes and now I almost think non progressive from the 70s is crap.
What? You just said you like those bands and mentioned songs you like best.
I mean modern rock like Avenged Sevenfold (they're still ok), Linkin Park, Alter bridge, and Foo Fighters. Once I heard Dream Theater and The Mars Volta, I knew modern rock was pretty average sounding music, and did not get my blood flowing like Dream Theater and The Mars Volta do. Yes is from the 70s, and they put the modern rock bands to shame too.

Avenged Sevenfold became instantly silly once I heard Pinkly Smooth (the Rev's old band) WAYWAYWAY better imo
If you like Dream Theater and Volta, seriously look at Enditol, Opeth, Haken, and there are many many more.
I'm one of the biggest Volta fanboys I know and I have worked VERY hard to find every band taht's even remotely like the volta. Children of Eden are really great. Circa Survive, The Sound of Animals Fighting, The Dear Hunter

Liking an specific genre from a certain era and saying the rest is crap is dumb
Wouldn't it be more subjective or opinion than anything? Everything that's rock on the radio these days is pretty bad to me. The bands I mentioned just don't sound good to me anymore either, they release the same album every time.

Just as long as you aren't judging all modern music by what you hear on the radio, I guess.
