They really are excellent,David.

A bit of trivia about Jeremy Brett. He was the cousin of the actor,Martin Clunes.

He originallly came to fame when starred in the film,'My Fair Lady'

Before Jeremy Brett died,he had been sectioned under the mental health act as he really believed that he was the charachter of Sherlock Holmes that he had been playing. That's what I call method acting.Very sad.

oh, that's amazing because I was just going to say he really was Holmes..  it's too bad that happened and that he couldn't just be a happy eccentric actor

I'm off in a while to clear out my shed.

Evelyn (Mrs Erg) wants to turn our box room into a study so I have to make room in our shed.

Although we do have a loft,I like to keep that as clear as possible.
I also don't like to put stuff up there because it either gets forgotten and will be a pain in the proverbial to remove if and when we move house.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

Not being a Holmes afficionado as some of my colleagues here appear to be, am I right in thinking Holmes had something of a liking for opium??

Don't think it was opium Jim, although laudanum was a popular leisure drug in "his day", I think he was partial to derivatives such as morphine and cocaine.

"The Game's afoot - bring your revolver, Watson!"

i have read all the Holmes stories, seen most of the movies and TV series, and believe Jeremy Brett was the best portrayal of Holmes... It is sad that Brett's wife died and he never got over it, immersing himself in the role so fully that he became obsessed with it, in latter episodes Jeremy does appear to look rather gaunt.

Most portrayals of Holmes and Watson make Watson out to be something of an old bluffer - totally wrong of course, as in the books they are both fairly young, Watson is a newly qualified GP, Holmes was a tutor at his medical College. Watson takes on the role as the narrator in the books, asking Holmes questions on the reader's behalf, and acts as a very sharp foil for Holmes, assisting him in his most difficult cases.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle tired of writing about Holmes in Strand Magazine as he wanted to write more "serious" works, and tried to kill him off, but the public were having none of it. Doyle wanted to be remembered as a serious writer of novels and a paranormal investigator - the irony is that Doyle was duped by many tricksters in his paranormal activities, scams that Holmes would have sussed out easily!  (including the "Cottingly Fairies" hoax and many theatrical seances).

Doyle finally retired Holmes as a country Bee-Keeper.

I absolutely adore the Sherlock Holmes stories. Smile  There is a little shelf in my library devoted to all things Sherlock (canonical and otherwise) - he is one of those characters who will never die (despite Moriarty, Conan Doyle and the passage of time!).

Indeed, Jeremy Brett was excellent, although he did take his portrayal a little over-the-top by the end (but I suppose that was because of his personal difficulties, as alluded to in previous posts).

My favourite Holmes is Robert Stephens in 'The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes' - a wonderful film. Smile  He brings out the weary sarcasm of the character so wonderfully.

Wasn't it Bruce Springsteen who sang "57 channels and nothing on"?

Idly flicking through my 5000 cable channels last night, I came across Dave (the channel) advertising a program on "at 9pm tonight". Only problem - it was 9:45 at the time!

And how come, when I flick through the channels, they're always on adverts?

The take-off ramp shouldn't be too much of a problem, but Canada may not be long enough for the run-up

I have never taken to the Basil Rathbone, Sherlock Holmes films.

Sherlock Holmes against the Nazis etc.

Bringing Conan Doyle/Holmes into the 20th It just doesn't do it for me I'm afraid.

In the meantime, I still love my KLR650, but some extra ooomph on the highway, and better wind protection would be nice....

It's a lovely drop as you well know,Jim

I would also heartily recommend 'Meantime Brewery of Greenwich 'Strong Pale Ale'.Available at Sainsbury's*

It comes in the large,cork-stopped bottles ala Courage bottled beer from the days of yore.
