1 stars   Undoubtedly one of the worst bands to ever have the term "prog" applied to their music, this is more of the same. Tasteless bombast that makes ELP sound austere. The vocals (as always) are terrible, and if your idea of a hot guitarist is metal hammering/shredding w___-off this is right up your alley. And it's a dead end. Listen to this and then listen to a real progressive masterpiece like Van der Graaf's "Pawn Hearts", then walk shamefacedly towards your dustbin and insert this embarrassment directly into it and never look back.

Crappy, tasteless review

Crappy, tasteless, but correct.

Yeah, how does he do that? It is very annoying to read.

btw This Thomas Mardy guy has just joined as Winter Wine as well, and he's still doing the case thing.

NIGHTWISH Once
Review (Permanent link) by Symphonic Age @ 10:30:05 AM EST, 7/16/2005

5 stars  —  It does happens when the Renaissance meet the Rhapsody? They are born the Nightwish! In fact the immense Tarja Turunen copies the better Annie Haslam (listened to "Ghost Love Score", "Kuolema Tekee Taitelijan" and "Higher Than Hope" and then say me!). "Ghost Love Score" is a tax to the Led Zeppelin of "Starway To Heaven" and "Kashmir"! "Wish I Had An Angel" surprises for the use of drum machine really effective. "Nemo" is a little dark and "Creek Mary's Blood" is a classic music! "The Siren" seems gone out from an electric version of "Sherazade And Other Stories" of the Renaissance and "Dead Garden" is (to seem mine!) a Symphonic version of Nevermore! This is not true Prog Metal, but Symphonic Metal. But for a fan of the little Prog matters. Before certain masterpieces...

Makes reasonable sense to me, although you do have to make allowance for the literal translations of the on-line translators.

In essence, the music is a sort of hybrid of Renaissance and Rhapsody. Not a bad description actually!Clap

ARABESQUE Tales of Power
Review (Permanent link) by Keith (Muzikman) Hannaleck @ 7:52:20 PM EST, 5/30/2005

PROG REVIEWER
4 stars  —  Lion Music has found themselves another group of storm troopers, they are called ARABESQUE, and they hail from the far away land of Holland. With two firecracker female lead singers, Nicole de Seriere and Katja Salemi, this band has a very unique sound, one that is difficult to pinpoint. That is exciting to me because I can't easily explain their music, they are that original! Its undeniably progressive metal with the dark and light sides spread out equally throughout the recording. This makes for a tasty variety in the grand scheme of things. The women can sing like they are she devils or like angels, depending on the musical background they are adapting to. The musicianship is positively stellar, provided by Joop Wolters (guitar), Rene Ubachs (keyboards), Marc van Mierlo (drums), and Frank de Groot (bass).

This music is very concentrated and will require several listens to completely ingest and digest properly. I was impressed how they mixed it up so well. One moment they are in the middle of a metal rap, switch over to a death growl, and then they are singing like they are beckoning you to heavens pearly gates. It's in fact so radical it's as if they jumped out of hell and entered heaven all within the bat of an eye. And what's more, the vocals seem to fit like a glove on the hands of the music at every change in the road. There is no over production or misuse of technology, this is for real talent in its very essence at work here, without the masking of multi overdubbing and electronic gizmos. Simply put... every song kicks ass in a major way. I loved it.

If you have been in the need of something really different and you get off on progressive metal, this is one group you will fall in love with instantly. Keep an eye on this band, they are going places.

Rating: 4.5/5

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”

"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

ZAPPA, FRANK The Yellow Shark progressive rock album and reviews RIO/Avant-Prog

ZAPPA, FRANK "The Yellow Shark"

4 stars   its great. I'm going to say that. The first song, dont look past me is one of the most amazing songs i have ever heard. All the other songs are great, too, but not too great. Cover my eyes is also good, but it did get boring after hearing it a couple times.

Yes, this review is great too, although not that great. Not great at all, actually. Doesn't say anything about the music...

I'll translate the Zappa's review

This record is a proof of the styles and techniques Zappa used along his career, since the fourth excercise which comes from the era previous of "Monsters of Invention" creation. Zappa always mentioned Varése as his main influence but it seems clear that he had many others like Bartok and Stravinsky, at the very least. Actually, Zappa takes everything that has existed in modern music, from 1900 and so on, including Rock and Jazz, to rebuid it in his wide and technically flawless work

Hope it helped

YES "9012 LIVE"

3 stars   This was one of the worst live YES album ever. The thing that makes it so bad is the fact that Trevor Rabin and Tony Kaye can't play Steve Howe and Rick Wakeman's parts, this shows how skilled the full YES line up is. In the WURM section of Starship Trooper Jon Anderson plays guitar to back Rabin who tries to immitate Steve Howe but just can't, it is a real shame. Don't wast your money if you want Live Yes on screen then get Songs from "Tsongas Yes 35th Anniversary Concert", dont waste your money on a three peice YES band plud two ameturs.

If he hates this album so much, then why does he give it three stars??

Actually, if I remember correctly ... and this was the one where all the guys dressed as if they were about to head out for an aerobics class, wasn't it?  ... I did think that Rabin wasn't trying to imitate Howe, but play his own style ... and did a *%(*# awful job of it on the Howe-era material IMO!

But that's not the point ... BJ is correct ... the review doesn't match the rating ... any answers for us Olympus?
