Hi Chris,
To which samples of BSOTM are you refering to? Those of this recording they release right now, or from one of their albums?
Anybody know this magazine+2 cd's called Improvised Music from Japan 2005:
Is there one for 2006 already?
"
The 2005 edition of the annual Japanese-English magazine Improvised Music from Japan is devoted entirely to recent albums. Over 350 releases (with a cover photo for each) are presented. The albums, mainly from 2004-2005, span a wide range of styles--improv, onkyo, noise, electronics, contemporary classical, free jazz, avant-rock, and more. While contributions from music critics are numerous, this is not just a collection of reviews. Musicians write about their own and other artists' works, label owners about their labels . . . The articles' styles and points of view are as diverse as the albums they present. IMJ 2005 also includes 2 CDs with a total of 21 tracks--by PsysEx, Jio Shimizu, Tetsuya Umeda, mills, sim, Toshihiro Koike, Shuichi Ohori, Chihiro Wada, Toshiya Tsunoda, Kiyoshi Mizutani, VOIMA, Bunsho Nishikawa and Tim Olive, m/s (Minoru Sato), Yasuo Totsuka, Diver, Mitsuhiro Yoshimura, Tomomi Adachi, The Cinngirls, aspects, Yui Kimijima, and Merzbow.

The album with Aaron Moses. I've always had mixed feelings about BSOTM; a lot of the time they're a bit too cold and intellectually detached for my taste - RIO without the Rock - but they've also made some spectacular music (pretty much the same as I feel about Art Zoyd). This collaboration seems to have brought out the best in them.

I see what you mean about the cold feeling (particularly in Art Zoyd), but I actually love this kind of feeling they create, so we are seeing the same thing only from different sides of the mirror.
As for BSOTM, I really like their Petrophonics album and I think that there they manage to come out a bit of their detached approach as you describe it (which I agree with to some extent). I still need to listen to The Irridium Controversy, so I don't know if they continue on this path or this was just that particular album.
I don't know much about Aaron Moses, but given your compliments for this album, I will go and look further on about him.

Hi guys. Long time no post. I've been listening to Moonchild by John Zorn on my mp3 player for some time now and I'm enjoying the really random playing by Trevor, Joey and Mike. The vocals (if it can be called like that) always make me laugh and stunned too. I isn't human I tell ya. The albums is really nice when on the right mood, but it isn't too good either. At the momment I find it an ok album. I'm also listening for the first time Boredoms - Super AE and at first time I found the first song to be a good one. The noise turned me a bit off, but then I didn't mind that much. At the middle of the seconds this is sounding really good! Very frantic with the drums. Hard, fast and loud.

I was reading several interesting articles written by Piero Scaruffil
Here you can read a little about who this guy is:
One of the articles is on Avantgarde music (from the very start to this day and in classical music and in rock as well). You have there not only this scene but all other musical genres (and the progressive genres as well)
Plus, I was reading some articles on the Japanese rock scene here:
Nice reading if you have some time.
Good night.

I just received Super ae in the mail too. Great stuff! Moonchild is good, but not essential indeed.

I mentioned this to Chamberry before, that there is another Zorn release in the Film Works series # XVIII - The Treatment, which is quite melodic and accessible (as accessible as Electric Masada).
He is very prolific isn't he?

I just got Chocolate Synthesizer thanks to Yuko, but I haven't heard it yet. Tomorrow I'll give it a spin. And regarding Super AE, I've now heard it 2 times and I'm really enjoying it.

He sure is. I haven't heard The Treatment though. So far I 'only' have five volumes of his Film Works series: III, V, VI, XII and XVII.

The question is, is this abundance of records he puts out, a result of his having many new musical ideas, or is he becoming less groundbreaking than before?
Another thing. I read in Brandon Wu's blog in Ground and Sky about Zorn winning the MacArthur Fellows 2006

Fellas,
As we all know this is a superb thread. Is there a general consensus on
must-have-before-I-die recommendations ? I would love to hear a 'K-Tel
presents 40 RIO Classics' style comp from you guys! (but with no
shortened bandspace...)
Yoroshiku!

I am no authority on this (other people here are much more knowledgeable and can provide you with a good descriptive list of albums and bands).
So as this week go on, I will make my amateurish list, which would probably not be full, as I don't know as much as others here.
But just to be sure I understand, can I choose any album from any genre of RIO, Zeuhl, Avantgarde etc (math rock, noise and blah blah blah...)?
