Yeah I think you're talking about the track I was playing to them in the classroom as in my above post...is it 'Slightly All The Time', the 18 minute long one?

Yes, the first track on the album. He came into my office to practice some Swedish with me, so he sad: "Hej! Hur mar du?" I told him I was listening to music and turned the volume louder ... He thought it was some joke from me ... he looked helplessly at me, not knowing how to react. One part of him wanted to say: "Surely, you cannot listen to this ... eh" and another one wanted to say: "Gosh, man, I did not know you were that queer".

Interestingly when I asked him earlier about FLOWER KINGS, ANEKDOTEN, ÄNGLAGÅRD, PAIN OF SALVATION -- he said he had never heard of them.

LOL! The funniest thing is, I can picture the scenario, and am actually cracking up on my seat as I write!!! Soft Machine must have that kind of effect on all non-proggers...

I don't get offended when gay comedians make gay jokes.

Not even if they reinforce gay stereotypes and denigrate homosexuality? You really should.

And here's a link, this will show what happens when people no longer care about Swedish, and what the results are (I see word separations like that on a daily basis). The first set is erroneous word separations, the second how it should be written to make sense.

English isn't anything like it originally was either, it gets changed on a near-daily basis.

And that site's hilarious.

Anyway, if the gay comedian made a gay joke in a tongue-in-cheek, silly manner that showed he wasn't serious about it, I would not be offended.  An example would be if he talked about a time he started lisping heavily at a job interview.  Of *course* he wouldn't really do that, it's just silly to say it.

I know that Swedish is a beautiful and expressive language, I especially love the pitch and rhythm of it.  When Roine said there were "four words", no one got the idea that it was a non-expressive language.  Hell, he used to write songs entirely in Swedish.  And during the set, he talked to his keyboardist, Tomas, in Swedish.  If anyone thought he was serious about the "four words" thing, they'd be immediately corrected at that point.

I think most "ordinary" people are just so unprepared for prog. They think all music should sound just like "radio".

I bet prog sounds to them just like the alien music would sound to me!

My friend's reaction to some song from "Division Bell" (I forgot which it was):

- What's that?

- "Pink Floyd"

- Ah, the music you should listen to when doped up ...

Hmm..., Alien music, now there's an idea!

Indeed, the English language is getting butchered beyond recognition now and it bugs me to be honest.  The whole invention of texting/chat-rooms means that the shorthand people use, is becoming the standard nowadays.

I type reasonably fast, so typing sentences out fully is no extra hardship for me and people get what I mean too.  I still get confused with texting shorthand and I'm 24!

I have noticed something amongst us progsters and that is that we are a very literature bunch.

James.

Yes, but it moves towards clarity and the written language getting closer to the spoken word.

I'm not generally a prescriptivist, but what's happening in Swedish is the exact opposite.

If you bought a product like a candy bar in the US (or the UK, or France, Spain, etc.) and its wrapper had some serious grammar or spelling error on it, and you contacted the company to let them know this, they would be grateful that you caught it, slightly embarassed that it had gotten through QC and would most certainly fix it.

If you do that in Sweden, you get asked who the hell you think you are, why in the world you would care, and why should they change it since "people understand what it says anyway". The lack of respect for the language here is staggering. You can't grasp it until you've lived here.

Working as a translator, I don't know how often I hear people telling how much Swedish sucks as a language (I'm sure it's almost weekly). And then they'll praise English, and how they understand it so well that they don't need to read the subtitles on TV. After that, they'll be introduced to my American wife, and hardly be able to keep up a running conversation with her. It's just sad.

Those are deliberate brand-name "errors". Not even remotely the same thing.

Listen, I didn't rip on you for "Their is so much misspelling", so I think I'm being really damned nice.

The only thread I've been seriously antagonistic in has been the "Prog ruleth all forms of Art and all Punk Rockers are vermin" one, where there were some people who needed a severe clipping about the ears.
