if we really think about the history of prog, why it was vreated and the only simlar variable in all of prog; it is this.

They created this style and genre to be able to have the freedom to incorperate anything they wanted inot their music. To see how far they could push boundries. ANd whether a prog song has 7896 different time signitures in it or one, wheather it extremly complex like Dream Theater or very simple like Floyd, wheather it has incredible harmonies like Yes or it has simple or no harmonies like OPETH, wheather it uses unique and orignal instruments like KING CRIMSON or GOD SPEED YOU BLACK EMPOROR  or it has a small simple band like Porcupine tree, whater it is masturbatory and pompus like ELP or it is in it just for the porpose of music like flower kings, it all has the same basic idea. " Im going to make the music that I hear in my heart, the music I want to hear."

and altohugh there were a lot of answers in this thread that are usually true for prog such as

Eargasmic, Sophisticated, long, synthesizers, complex, impressive, ect.

These things are not true for all prog.

However, the ideals of prog and concept behind the creation of prog entails that all prog music is, above all other words, FREEDOM
