It has some moments but it's way below the level of THE MOUNTAIN.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I never considered The Mountain to be the erm peak of Haken's music. I loved Affinity much more and probably the same for Vector. I was very unsure about Virus which seemed to veer too much towards prog metal but the latest is a good un based on my early listenings.

Depending upon your tastes...any Haken album could be your favorite. Can't say that for most bands.

I don't think they've ever done anything mediocre. Sure, some of their albums are better than others, but never anything mediocre IMO. New album is quite good, nice flow.

I can't help but feel a little commiseration with Pedro's idea that it's about change, not sameness, that music gets its growth and most exciting results. Thus, I really have trouble getting excited about new releases coming out from all these prog dinosaurs; it's the new musics, the new discoveries--the "happy accidents"--that keep me going. Like Pierre W-Cheese (CAMEMBERT)'s new band, OIAPOK, and a third (and totally unexpected) release from Galicia's AMOEBA SPLIT.
If I want to listen to the essence of TFK, Riverside, Focus, Yes, Genesis, JTull, Marillion, Rush, Spock's Beard, Neal Morse, etc., I just go back to one of the albums I already own of theirs--I don't need a new one that's going to sound the same as the ones they've already done. Thank goodness for the few artists out there who test themselves by exploring new territory--like Toby Driver, Devy, Townsend, Mattias Olsson, Ketil Vestrum Einarsen, Radiohead, and Arnaud Bukwald.

Phastasmagloria by Karmic Juggernaut is out in three days. The previous LP was very interesting:
The new singles sound a little closer to Thank You Scientist than to Frank Zappa, but I'm still in for the ride: |

Digging the Ultraphauna
Echoes and Signals also just release a new album that I'm liking a lot and will probably make my year end chart (probably not top 3 but who knows).

^ Yeah, just listened to Ultraphauna - No No No No, very cool release. So varied!
And I'm always for another Secret Chiefs 3 iteration... I'm wondering if someone here is working on this new artist's addition to our database?

The last Hackberry album is pretty good. It reminds me to Sphere by Monkey3. A well-deserved listening if you are into that last band.
