An extremely talented multi-instrumentalist and Auteur.

Not a huge fan but had huge respect. A bit embarrassing in some respects but also, maybe the greatest compliment, my daughter (now 26) was conceived after watching 'Purple rain'!!!

^ What I was surprised about is how many people her age don't really know Prince's music.  When I was 26 I was quite aware of artists who were well before my time but who made an impact.  Shows how much popular music has splintered and how many rock/pop stars of Prince's stature who used to be known by everyone young & old just don't seem to matter as much in culture.

I think for our - people who are now in their 20s/early 30s - generation it has become harder to learn of older artists.  Somebody in the family has to have introduced them to us or we have to make a conscious effort to find out.  Else, the media mainly pushes contemporary artists on us.  Not a bad thing at all, the show must go on.  But say in my case, I didn't know about Prince when I was in school and listened to his music much later because he didn't really make a dent in the 90s.  I mean, those early 90s albums may have charted well but I am talking like MJ's Dangerous, Whitney Houston's appearance and songs on Bodyguard, Celine Dion with that cringe will go on song, etc.  He wasn't THAT successful.  If I had already been in college by the 90s, I would have been aware of his work because I would have got beyond the most popular hits.  But in all likelihood I may have got into rock in that case and still been oblivious to Prince.

I really like the Purple Rain album but never got around to checking out his other albums.  I should have, but somehow it just slipped my mind. RIP.

My daughter is very aware of Prince and his music- she was (for a while) a budding and potential professional musician and I was always impressed how wide her generations knowledge, understanding and boundary free appreciation of music was. My son whos just 20, and is a professional musician, has the same (if not wider) appreciation. Maybe they are not representative of their generations but I think its not as dire a situation as some make out. I think its more the nature of the 'Biz' and how popular culture is presented that's changed.

Just spun this one with my wife next to me on the sofa, we listened to both sides without saying a word. Bopping and swaying to the jam, mouthing the words and each of us reflecting on his work and life. Her only comment at the end of Side II......"I'm so sad...still" Cry

Report is out......http://www.cnn.com/2016/06/02/health/prince-death-opioid-overdose/index.html

What caught my attention was how thin he was at 112lbs......Does not take much fentanyl to cause issues when you are that small.

Jose, it was very sad to see, my friend...

Sad in that I feel bad for him, knowing how he felt about drugs, it must have been hard for him being in pain but trying to get off of them.  But I pause not 2 seconds with this official report....it no longer matters.  What is important from this point forward is his musical and creative legacy.

I agree, but there are those that just need to know the cause, I had thought is was some kind of OD based on what ever pain he may have been in, no doubt he was not a drug user and I am sure this was never in his plans.
His music will live on 4ever.....
