There's always time in the music press world of back-stabbing and conniving, for an old soiled adult on the block to become the new de rigueur prog journalist of the 21st Century.

Or maybe not.

I can see myself in 20 years time on one of those programs about music genres on BBC and getting cut off in my prime, just as I start to mention how good and wholesome progressive rock music is... they'll make me look silly.  Of course, I'd naturally be dressed unkempt, in a t-shirt with holes in with a chip in my hair.

Us prog journos are "eccentric" after all, we're not allowed to be normal.

would that make you underclass with working class aspirations??Wink

Kind of.

I want to enjoy working... at the moment, I cannot find anything I wish to do workwise, that I will enjoy. LOL

Work sucks! It always sucks.  The only job which wouldn't suck would be if someone would pay me to drink beer, watch tv, listen to prog and get laid.  I don't think that job exists though damnit.  Whoever invented work, should have finished the job.  Angry

I could post a rant of my own, but instead I feel moved to quote Philip Larkin, who put so much better than I could (well, a bit better Wink)

Toads

Why should I let the toad work
Squat on my life?
Can't I use my wit as a pitchfork
And drive the brute off?

Six days of the week it soils
With its sickening poison --
Just for paying a few bills!
That's out of proportion.

Lots of folk live on their wits:
Lecturers, lispers,
Losels, loblolly-men, louts --
They don't end as paupers;

Lots of folk live up lanes
With fires in a bucket,
Eat windfalls and tinned sardines --
They seem to like it.

Their nippers have got bare feet,
Their unspeakable wives
Are skinny as whippets -- and yet
No one actually starves .

Ah, were I courageous enough
To shout Stuff your pension !
But I know, all too well, that's the stuff
That dreams are made on:

For something sufficiently toad-like
Squats in me, too;
Its hunkers are heavy as hard luck,
And cold as snow,

And will never allow me to blarney
My way to getting
The fame and the girl and the money
All at one sitting.

I don't say, one bodies the other
One's spiritual truth;
But I do say it's hard to lose either,
When you love both.

'Like so many of you
I've got my doubts about how much to contribute
to the already rich among us...'

Robert Wyatt, Gloria Gloom

British Gas!

On Monday morning I discovered that my boiler - less than three years old - had sprung a slow leak (water) from somewhere. This £3000 boiler was installed by BG back in 2004. I called BG and an engineer turned up within the hour! Brilliant, and I'm on a service agreement with them so there was no call out charge. The engineer tightend something then b*ggered off 20 mins later. No worries into work I go. I get home and the bloody thing is leaking again. I call BG, and have to take the next day off waiting for another engineer, who turns up at 1:30pm and after 2.5 hours tightens something and once again, b*ggers off.

Looks ok. Checked this morning, leaking again. They wont come out tomorrow, I'm got meetinmgs all day today, apart from now obviuosly, so I have to wait until Monday.

My problem? Whilst complaing that this will be the third call out, and I'm having to use up days of my annual leave entitlement, the harpy on the other end of the phone is trying to sell me more BG products!! I pointed out that I would be reluctant to buy anything else from BG whilist I remian 'unconfident' about their ability to fix, what look like minor problems, but she persisted 'Mr Robinson, if you upgrade to..blah blah..' so I said 'Are you able to understand my position on this at all? Can you see why I may not want to buy new products at this time' In a cheery voice she responded 'Thankyou for calling British Gas. An engineer will be with you on Monday as requested'

I would be less stressed about this, if this was not my third boiler in 8 years. They are not cheap!

Rant, rant, grumble moan...

Sh!t! Late for meeting...
£3000 for a boiler??? Are you sure Andy?

Near as damn it, when you include VAT and the charge for the installation. That was back in 2004..

Anyway, the problem persists, but it's 'contained' so I shall refrain from ranting for now..

'Ming Vase Pushed'
Now fetching a low estimate on the Antiques Roadshow. Michael Aspel was heard to say, Ming was cracked and therefore, worthless. The party that brought it here went away with their tails between their leg(s).

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.

^^^ it just seams to me that we have become so celebrity orientated and superficial as a 'soundbite' society that these days you can't be considered as a serious politician unless you have the right physical image.... hell, you can't even be considered capable of reading the news anymore unless you look like Sophie Raworth... (as Anna Ford and Moira Stewart both found to their cost when they were deemed 'over the hill')....Angry

it just annoys me so much, that the media and marketing gurus have conned the public into thinking that they should only take notice of someone in the public eye, if they would either like to be like them, or have sex with them....Censored

I guess that means that Andy Robinson and I should be seeking out a career in radio....Ermm

Are you saying that you and Andy have 'good faces for radio'?

'...And here's Michael Fish with the weather...'

Welcome back Michael Fish.
Was it just a one off last night that he did the weather forecast on the 6 O'clock news to 'celebrate' the 20th anniversary of the 'Hurricane'? If so,he's a bl**dy good sport.

I like that Dan guy who does the weather on  the 6 o'clock news.  He reminds me of an undertaker strangely...

I heard about Moira Stewart being axed... why was that?  My mother swears it was Moira doing the voice for Orange Mobile, but now she says she's not doing that now either!

Nutsacka Kerplunky is moving to Channel 5 too... I've not seen her recently, so maybe she hasn't got to work any notice?

I've also noticed people who go on Who Do You Think You Are? end up leaving... Kerplunky and Stewart, being two who come to mind.

Maybe Graeme Norton will be next, eh?  We can but hope!

I believe they just decided her face didn't fit anymore... she was axed from the Andrew Marr show, wasn't she??

This is something I didn't know actually...but didn't she marry a millionaire, within living memory?

Here you go, James....

Newsreader Moira Stuart is to quit the BBC after 26 years of service, it has been confirmed.

Stuart was the BBC's first black news anchor and was awarded an OBE in 2001 for services to broadcasting.

However, she was cut from the BBC's Breakfast lineup after a 2006 revamp and then removed from Andrew Marr's
Sunday AM show in March 2007.

Though the corporation refused to comment on the end of her regular appearances, it was widely felt that BBC bosses saw Stuart as 'too old'.

Her departure follows the 2006 retirement of colleague Anna Ford, who quit the BBC aged 62, claiming she was leaving before she was "shovelled off" to News 24.

Can I rant about builders?
We were due to have some drainage put in for a new toilet on Saturday. Spent Friday evening clearing the space of computers and books etc ready for them to start 9am Saturday. The builder and the plumber were ready but the drain man failed to show and couldn't be contacted, so a waste of a day. This seems to happen all the time - our builder spends more time waiting for deliveries and people than he does working. No wonder building projects in this country are always late and over budget!

I wish to sympathise... I desperately need a sump pump connected to the water and heating systems in the boiler room.  I had a quotation from the engineers for £1600, so eventually, the YHA gave me the money to have it done...(just).

I get them back on site, and they say it can't be put in until I have a trench dug down through the floor, and out through a wall....Angry....they never said anything about that at the time!! I thought the work was all inclusive.... but apparently, they don't dig holes.....Confused

It's like BT... they send a guy round to fix your box for your 'phone and he cannot do it, because he's the indoor guy and you need an outdoor guy...

This stuff happens all the time, apparently.

Am I the only one infatuated with Ellie Harrison from The One Show?  She's yummy, in a she's-not-my-girlfriend-so-don't-tell-her kind of way. - oops, that post should have been in the Grey Room!

I still haven't got my car back... grrr!
