Harder for weeds to grow through them since they're just colourful woodchips.
Make your plants stand out more especially if you don't have plants with red in them.
More interesting-looking than dirt.
Less inviting for slugs.

Set line-up, though I have had a fill-in on bass before. The songs take a while to learn and get down, and I usually only get one new one up and running for each show, so I have to keep the same line-up.
