Oy...RIP Marco.
Even though we were just reminded how dangerous racing is, this is still quite shocking to see. Terrible, terrible news.

Very much saddened by this. I've watched the odd MotoGP race and I was familiar with him and his amazing hair. Of course, he was also an awesome rider and could have been a future champion.
Requiescat in pace, Marco Simoncelli. |

I haven't seen the crash, it's too soon now... I think only in the next few days I'll have the heart to see it.
The wise Enzo Ferrari was right... he used to say he avoided to feel excessive friendship and admiration for a driver's personality, because he knew that everything could happen to any of them, thus leaving you in a state of greater desperation after a fatal crash. There is a reason why the call it "the cruel sport". Such an enormous work has been done in terms of bike and track safety, and right now the only way to die is being run over by another bike. It might be a while before I actually support another rider, when I was little I cheered for Kato, and since his debut in 250cc Simoncelli was my favourite... Right now I feel the need of taking a break from this sport, until the I feel ready to start watching it again. My beloved sport...It's like when you love someone and he or she betrays you, you need a pause if you want to forgive. RIP Marco |

The grimmest week since the dreadful week in May 1994. The Dan Wheldon memory service is being streamed now at www.speedtv.com/ His private funeral took place yesterday in St. Petersburgh, Florida. |

Not a fan of MotoGP but tragic of course, and god damn it always seems to happen like this.
The 94 weekend, a string of NASCAR deaths in a 2ish year period ending with the infamous Dale Earnhardt crash, now these 2. RIP Edited by JJLehto - October 23 2011 at 13:11 |

Plus Senna and Ratzenberg.
It seems to happen in twos. Hmm. The BBC aren't showing the accident (obviously due to the nature of it) but did show the Wheldon one. I guess because you actually see the rider in bike racing, the footage would be deemed much worse. I still think the BBC should be consistent though. Either show all fatal accidents or don't show them at all. Of course, I do not really want to see the Simoncelli accident but then I didn't really want to see the Wheldon one either. Sorry to be a bit off topic and negative. Such a sad loss though and my thoughts are with his whole family and his friends. |

And how many "so close" accidents have there been? Like Rubens that same dreaded weekend, Jerry Nadeu in NASCAR in almost the same crash as Dale Earnhardt (showing the quick step up in safety) that Kenny Brack crash.
I did hear from a big NASCAR friend of mine that a few deaths have occured in real local series, made me realize how often this may happen and we'd never know! ![]() |

There's usually a death at the Isle of Man TT every year as well. I also think I heard of a death in motocycle sidecar racing recently in England as well.

^There's usually 2 or 3 a year in Motorcycle street racing like at the Isle of Man TT as its 200mph on closed country lanes.
I suspect the BBC didnt show the Simoncelli crash because reportedly his helmet came of in the incident, how that happened I'll never know. |

Well I heard he was run over, so maybe it happened due to that?
Horrible though. I am glad they didn't show it. I'm just still not sure though whether showing the Wheldon crash was necessarily a good idea. Nobody should see death on the television in any form, really. It's like the P51 crash at Reno... the footage shown didn't really show the crash. Obviously if it happens live, then that's different. I remember seeing the Senna crash all those years ago. Edited by James - October 23 2011 at 18:15 |

It's probably good they didn't show it. It was pretty unnerving and spooky. Maybe its just me, but with the wheldon crash I really couldn't tell what happened on the first few replays. In fact, I thought Power's car was Wheldon's intially. But with Marco's you could tell exactly what happened, and could see it in full...personally I would have been shocked if he lived.

I'm not surprised, I don't mean this to sound cold or cruel but isn't that track/race pretty much like a death trap? I know it's incredibly dangerous. |

They annually do the North-West or something motorbike race on the public roads at Dundrod outside Belfast, Northern Ireland. It is called Ulster Grand Prix, I see from the link. I have done that circuit on a push bike sometimes and it is a dangerous road on anything faster than a push bike and burst lungs. And it has got some fatallities on a regular basis, this race. The road is line by telegraph posts and other immovable hard objects. If you go of line there, you are toast. The circuit is littered with blind corners and crests too. Last time I was there, the road was greasy as heck too. I was speeding along in 20 miles an hour and feared for my life. That race is too dangerous for us mere mortals. We leave that to the loonies.

Pretty much. There's houses by the road and I know 'bikes have gone into walls before. My father has been round it (not as part of the race). My parents used to go to a lot of 'bike racing in the 1960s and used to watch Mike Hawthorne and Barry Sheen race a lot. |

RIP Marco Simoncelli, I got up at 6h30 to watch the races on TV and saw the crash live and the relatively long wait with the race suspended until the tragic news came in and the race was finally cancelled. Terrible accident, Marco fell in a turn and american rider Colin Edwards who was behind could do absolutely nothing to avoid hitting him straight on.
Following the protocol when the helmet of the rider comes off, the MotoGP broadcasting did not replay the accident.
Moto GP is relatively safe nowadays but the biggest risk remains being hit by another rider, there's not much which can be done to reduce this risk.

I'm sorry you had to see that live, Gerinski. That must have been horrible to see. My thoughts also go out to Colin Edwards as well. Although he could do nothing, I am sure he''s terribly upset about it and likely feels responsible.
It was the right decision not to show replays too. |

Happy news for a change, especially for the Jersey boy: I haven't looked up any other sources, but according to the biggest newspaper in Finland there will be an F1 race in New Jersey starting in 2013. They say the circuit will be like a mix of Spa and Monaco.
