OK. First post on new computer...

Seemed appropriate to make it here.

New musical news:

Absent Lovers (Live In Montreal) is way better than all the 80s Crimson studio stuff. Way better. Bloody superb record.

Veracious has arrived... haven't been in a Hammilly mood yet, just about to listen to Over, though.

Let It Bleed is a really good record, been appreciating Queen's Innuendo a bit more too.

Darwin! by Banco Del Mutuo Soccorso is now possibly my favourite album ever. I'm not kidding, either.

The other big Italian groups do knock the stuffing out of PFM, but L'Isola Di Niente is still a great record.

New gaming news (such a nerd Orb is):

Crusades campaign (MTW expansion) was actually pretty solid. Historically awful, a bit crowded on events, and I simply lose motivation whenever I see horse archer armies, but from the campaign map perspective, it was quite interesting and fun.

MTW is more interesting than I remembered. Unfortunate that some of the features simply don't have any effect in practise, and equally unfortunate that nothing happens if you're not there.

Soulbringer is incomprehensible.

My problem with Morrowind is the same as it was before... too freeform and large for me. I can see why people love it, but I really hate starting so slowly and progressing so unnoticeably.

You need that album. Hell, I needed that album, and I'm not a huge fan of TAPP and Beat (I like them, but... nothing special, really). The versions of Sleepless and Waiting Man are brilliance.

I really do. The 80s era albums are all my favorites.

Do you have Vroom Vroom? I'm going to get it because while I'm not a big fan of the other Crimson I've heard, Thrak is quite good.

Ornette Coleman might be the best person ever.

Thrak is very good. Clap

Only Crimson live albums I have are the ProjeKcts, since I'm generally not a fan of live material.

Well I am getting Vroom instead of studio Thrak because I assume the studio version isn't this good.

It's really funny that Ornette Coleman pissed everyone off because to my modern ears, Something Else!!! is quite tame and soft (although still awesome).

By the way, if anyone has not heard the album Free Jazz, listen to this IMMEDIATELY. It was recorded in 1960, and yet people still call Schizoid Man groundbreaking...

That video/song makes me want to expand my very small jazz collection.

Ornette Coleman is essential listening for anyone who is interested in avant-garde music, and not just because an album like Free Jazz is much more avant-garde than most avant-prog. He exploded jazz into shards of beauty, and although later artists like Brotzmann focused more on the explosion than the beauty, his influence is inestimable.

Free Jazz an album also has an amazing story. Ornette had the idea of two quartets improvising together, and since he had just recorded the breathtaking Shape of Jazz to Come, he had the influence to pull it off. He wrote a framework for them to improvise, and it's possible they helped too, there doesn't appear to be much documentation about the whole thing. In fact, much of what is written about it is a lie, because the liner notes and reviews pretend they walked in and played for 37 minutes and walked, but there is a tape of the first take. But in any case, they did play for 37 uninterrupted minutes, and they didn't do any takes after that because they were so happy with what they got. Sometimes I guess everything just works out.

I'm just enjoying the vinyl right now. Vancouver looks super weird right now, I'll get a picture...
