Slightly expanded biography for The Flowers of Hell: https://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=6054 for consideration: This band is the first in Julien's list of biographies with less than 200 characters (less than ~3 lines) from a while back, which you can find here. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE FLOWERS OF HELL are a transatlantic experimental orchestra founded and led by self-taught musician Greg JARVIS, and made up of a revolving line-up of 16 or so independent musicians based in Toronto and London, whose mostly instrumental sound builds bridges between classical music and post-rock, shoegaze, space rock and drone music. THE FLOWERS OF HELL began as a London based studio project in 2002 and expanded into a live act in 2005, with the founding six-piece line up consisting of JARVIS himself as the principal guitarist, Guri HUMMELSUND on drums, Abi FRY on viola (later of BRITISH SEA POWER and BAT FOR LASHES), Owen JAMES on trumpet, Ruth BARLOW as the accompanying guitarist, and Steve HEAD on Hammond organ. After a decade spent abroad in London and Eastern Europe, Greg JARVIS re-located to his native Toronto in 2007, and THE FLOWERS OF HELL became a trans-continental act with the addition of Canadian musicians to their line-up. Key members from the UK and Canada combine for their infrequent tours which have seen them perform at Austin Psych Fest and Liverpool Psych Fest. They have established themselves as an 'artist's artist' over the past decade, with praise having come from members of THE VELVET UNDERGOUND, MY BLOODY VALENTINE, SPACEMEN 3, THE FUGS, THE PATTI SMITH GROUP and several others. NASA's ground control team have also used the band's music to accompany some of the footage from their 'Discovery' space shuttle missions. THE FLOWERS OF HELL's founder and leader Greg JARVIS has a rare neurological condition called synesthesia, a cognitive trait found in 4% of the population who are born with two (or more) senses intermingled which causes him to involuntarily see all sounds as abstract shapes all around him. In creating and arranging music for THE FLOWERS OF HELL, JARVIS uses this condition as a visual language of sound to craft moving sonic paintings In early 2008, following his move back to Toronto, JARVIS debuted a North American branch of the group as an opening act for SPECTRUM (one of the post-SPACEMAN 3 projects of Pete 'Sonic Boom' KEMBER). Pete KEMBER then mentored JARVIS through the creation of the FLOWERS OF HELL's 2006 self-titled debut album, and in their early years the group collaborated with musicians who were side players or leaders in a number of well established acts from the experimental side of the indie rock genre - including many of their favourite bands - such as SPIRITUALIZED, DEATH IN VEGAS, THE PATTI SMITH GROUP (Ivan KRAL), BRITISH SEA POWER, BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE, THE EARLIES, THE PLASTIC PEOPLE OF THE UNIVERSE and others. This mostly instrumental self-titled debut album was largely recorded by Tim HOLMES of DEATH IN VEGAS at the Contino Rooms in London. Pete KEMBER of Spacemen 3 mixed and performed on the track 'Through The F Hole', contributed a liner note poem to the Japanese CD version, and was a guest DJ at the record's London release concert. Band leader Greg JARVIS has stated that the goal of the album was to build classical interpretations influenced by THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO's music and the SPACEMEN 3 / early SPIRITUALIZED sound. The record was initially released in the UK in November 2006 by Earworm Records, followed by a release in Japan in 2007 by Starmole Records. THE FLOWERS OF HELL have operated on both continents simultaneously following the release of their debut album, with JARVIS going back and forth for concerts and all members contributing to recordings. THE FLOWERS OF HELL's second studio album is called 'Come Hell or High Water'. Released in April 2009 on Benbecula Records in the UK and Unfamiliar Records in Canada, the album was recorded in over 40 sessions with 30 musicians in London, Prague, Toronto, Detroit, and Texas. According to an interview in Now magazine and a review in URB, the album was conceived as a celebration of Greg JARVIS's synaesthesia condition, and he based the composing, recording, arranging, and preliminary mixing of the album on his synaesthetic visions. Noted guests on the record include PATTI SMITH/IGGY POP collaborator Ivan KRAL on bass, who had been a mentor to JARVIS, mix work from SPACEMEN 3's Peter KEMBER, strings from BRITISH SEA POWER's Abi FRY, THE CLIENTELE's Mel DRAISEY and BROKEN SOCIAL SCENE's Julie PENNER, amongst others. However, the entire FLOWERS OF HELL project nearly came to an early end in 2010 after Jarvis was held by the Organisasi Papua Merdeka movement (OPM) - a rebel army in Papua New Guinea who'd mistaken him for a MI5 spy while he was holidaying there seeking out the music of cannibals. Knowing the fighters' history of kidnapping and killing foreigners, and fearful for his life, JARVIS gained his freedom by playing a ukulele to convince them that he truly was a musician and not a foreign spy. The band's third album 'O' was released a short while later on November 15th 2010. This third album consists of one song lasting 46 minutes in its stereo mix and 42 minutes in its surround sound mix. The release's liner notes state that the piece is an exploration of band leader Greg JARVIS's synesthesia and was conceived as a piece of absolute music (music with no specific subject matter). It consists of rehearsed improvisations performed within a 12 part fixed song structure, recorded in one take at the end of a 9000 km tour. The album was produced by JARVIS himself, with recording taking place in Toronto with sound engineer Jon DREW, and the mixing in Manchester by JARVIS and fellow synesthete Tom KNOTT of THE EARLIES. It was initially released by Toronto based record label Optical Sounds on a double sided CD/DVD disc, coupled with a concert film, 'Live At The Music Gallery'. THE FLOWERS OF HELL performed 'O' live as a seated 12 piece with JARVIS conducting at Toronto's Yonge-Dundas Square as the closing act of the 2011 Intersection Festival of experimental and new classical music. THE FLOWERS OF HELL's fourth studio album 'Odes' was released in October 2012 - again through Toronto based record label Optical Sounds - and is a covers record, this being the first release from the group to feature vocals and verse-chorus-verse song structures. It was premiered by Lou REED, who opened the twelfth and final episode of his BBC 6/Sirius-XM New York Shuffle radio show praising the group and airing three songs from the album in a row. In September 2015 a five-song EP called 'Aria 51', made in collaboration with opera soprano Danie FRIESEN, was released through Optical Sounds. The EP combines effects-laden singing from FRIESEN with loud guitars and orchestral arrangements. FLOWERS OF HELL leader Greg JARVIS explained that the project had been in the works for some time, saying in a statement: "Fusing classical with the more experimental end of shoegaze music has always been our ambition and this EP, along with the upcoming symphony, are something we've been working on in our downtime for the past six years." The EP was essentially a teaser for the band's fifth studio album, a four-part psych-classical opus called 'Symphony No.1' which the group completed in 2016. Six years in the making, it seeks to combine the epic bombast of romantic era classical music with sounds from the experimental edges of indie rock. Inspiration for the new material came from a wide array of experiences and encounters, and it was a conversation with THE SEX PISTOLS' late manager Malcolm MCLAREN in Prague which cemented JARVIS's drive to combine punk/indie rock and classical music. When asked how he'd made the symphonic versions of the Pistols' songs along with his more operatic records, MCLAREN replied: "I don't play anything, I just know what I want and tell people in the studio what to do or what to try to do - and eventually it becomes what I'm after." That gave JARVIS the belief that he could do symphonic stuff too, despite not being able to read or write a note. Creating and mixing the album from more than 150 simultaneous layers of sound from over 70 hours of demoed melodies was a daunting task, and led to JARVIS isolating himself on the Fort St. Louis, a cargo freighter making a two week crossing of the Atlantic. He returned feeling the record needed an opera soprano, and began to restructure it all again after tracking down Danie FRIESEN, a Toronto soprano he’d met in a local café. JARVIS had previously hit some rough patches where he considered abandoning the entire project altogether. Thankfully, the fact that Lou REED had praised THE FLOWERS OF HELL's work on his final BBC6/Sirius-XM New York Shuffle radio show gave JARVIS the encouragement he needed to continue pursuing the project. That album was finally released on December 2nd 2016 - again through Toronto based record label Optical Sounds. In 2020, a career-spanning compilation album called 'Outlanders' was released, and their decade-old 'Come Hell Or High Water' album was put on display in the Tate Britain's exhibition of works by the 19th century Art Nouveau illustrator Aubrey BEARDSLEY. The group's final performance before the coronavirus lockdown took place at the exhibition's opening gala. In 2023, the band's sixth studio album 'Keshakhtaran' was released - digitally to begin with on 12th May - and then later on vinyl and bonus CD via the Space Age Recordings label (home to many of SONIC BOOM's recordings). At around the same time, the band also released the first vinyl pressing of their 2012 cult classic album 'Odes'. Keshakhtaran is an urban dictionary term for 'seeking nirvana through meditation to sound, especially when you're stoned', and the album began as a 40-minute 'space guitar' piece that Greg JARVIS had put together out of bits and bobs he'd been playing in his home studio for a girlfriend to meditate to in the months before Covid. During the pandemic he sent the recording to caged-up band members and friends for them to add their layers to, and the album developed as a result of these additional contributions. The music was eventually split into two lengthy tracks, with the addition of a bonus single 'Foray Through Keshakhtaran'. Throughout the band’s evolution, JARVIS has remained as its main composer and producer. Biography compiled by David (yam yam) from various sources, October 2023. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The band's first two albums need some work doing to them too. Discogs has a couple of them slightly longer, and the Bandcamp page for the album has track 5 'White Out' as track 9, and with a time of 10:00 rather than the 3:24 quoted everywhere else. Note 2: There are several more recent albums, and also an EP which aren't on the site as yet. I will add these releases tomorrow, unless Mayer would like to do the honours. Edit: Band website needs updating to https://www.flowersofhell.com/. A couple of typos and non-standard inverted commas in the biography fixed (these usually end up being reproduced as question marks by our main site software). There may be more, so someone else had better proof read it too lol! E&O Team: WOW, thanks a lot, David !!! Great job ! All done now. Except that I don't have time to add albums right now...

Edit: I'll hopefully add the three missing studio albums and the EP later tonight. Edit 2: Three studio albums, one compilation, an EP and a single now added. Discography is complete as far as I know apart from an untitled three-track single/EP recorded by The Flowers of Hell with Will Carruthers in 2008, and released by Awkward Silence Recordings that year on CDr. The full info is available here: https://www.discogs.com/release/1392768-The-Flowers-Of-Hell-Will-Carruthers-Untitled, so it could easily be added if an untitled release like this is permitted on the site (the Awkward Silence Recordings label was set up in 1999 to release limited edition split singles/EPs, and it focussed on featuring an artist who had released music on other labels on one side, and then an unknown often quite similar sounding artist on the other. Most of its releases were apparently untitled). Edit 3: While you're correcting the date of that album, it also currently has a different sized image to the other albums on the page (not a square image like the rest of them). This is a better one from Bandcamp, with the slight white edge that it has removed, and then adjusted very slightly so that the image is exactly square. This image when opened up in a new tab will be 600 x 600 px, and will match all the others on the page if used. I think we're almost done then...
