Technically, it's not even that. There is no grammatical subject.

Don't be mean Thellama, it's a sentence because it has a verb and the subject doesn't need to be mentioned.

It's a whole sentence, but still not worth LOL

Well, I don't mean to get all school-marmish about this, but since I teach English comp, I think I'll throw my two cents in here. Actually the sentence is not a whole sentence. It lacks a verb, which is a necessary part of any sentence, even one word sentences, like "Stop!"

Okay, thank you. I recommend listening to Egg's "Polite Force", what a fantastic album that is.

As a second language English speaker I ask: Isn't GO" a verb?

The pseudo sentence is: Temptation to go to sleep

Hi Ivan,

This language stuff is tricky. I never really learned it until I was in graduate school, and even then I barely understood some of it. But the basic point here is this:

"Tempation" is a noun, and "to go to sleep" is an infinitive phrase that modifies the noun "tempation", so it's all a noun phrase.

So to use it in a sentence, the writer needs to link it to a subject, e.g., "This album is a [tempation to go to sleep]. So "is" is the verb in this sentence.

The point to take away is that when "to" is before a verb phrase (e.g., go, rock, sit, play) it cannot be the predicate (what the subject does) of the sentence. It needs to be linked  to a subject/verb construction.

Anyway, I recommend to any one any of Egg's albums because they have saved me from a deep lethargy that was affecting me about prog rock. I thought I couldn't respond to it anymore. Egg (and U.K.) have shown that my sensibilities are still alive, thank the lord. Smile I don't know why it has taken me so long to find these bands, but I'm really glad I have.

I'm going to rate it five stars as well; I just need to sit down and make the effort write a decent review. Smile

what the h*ll is this?... albums which have for example two 5-star-ratings, have averagely 3,77 stars or something like that!!

You can't rate them by the popularity. It's good that in top 100 list there's different way to list, weighted average, but i think the absolute averages should be somewhere.

No, no, no, this is sh*t!!

(or is my browser showing those averages somehow wrng??? I don't think so)

There could be a  row added where the weighted averages would be.

There are a number of threads on the Top 100 calculations. Best to use one of those rather than this thread.

I think no rating of 1 or 5 should be accepted without a review of at least 100 coherent words.

1%20stars This is not progressive rock but Romanian popular music. With good will we can call it rock as it uses the usual instruments and formulas associated with rock. But there is nothing of progressive in this and in the other Phoenix albums. The music itself is boring and repetitive.

This reviewer has no idea of what he´s talking about, everyone has it´s opinions, but this seems to be only a childish review.

I see the review was removed but the rating was kept (is there any difference, did the text pass the minimum length barrier?) - but I don't see any difference between abusing with a review and abusing with a rating. Confused

I like how you threw coherent in there to head them off at the pass. I've seen a number of reviews that look like someone typed with his face. I make spelling mistakes, but man, some of these are awful. And most of them come from those whoe first language is English

I believe that even if this doesn't change the average I beliebe it will at least a bit= we should delete one of them as an examplke to avoid this silly manipulation.

It's clear none of the voters speak English, they came here and were not able to wtrite a review Novi and Nowi are clearly the same person and the third one is also in the play.

My idea is to delete the one that has the highest ratings, and leave the ones that are closer to the review of a respected member as Erik gave for the album (I can trust more in his opinion), in this case NOWI's ratings should go.

The third one is probably a friend of them or a member of the band but despite he/she wrote the review in a 24 hour period and never came again, we don't have definive evidence.

It may sound ridiculous, but if we don't pull the bad weed from the root, the next time we may have 20 like this.

Iván

He only starts talking about VDGG in the second to last paragraph. The last two paragraphs were he actually talks about the album is good, but the 2/3 devoted to some guy on a TV show is pointless

Hmmm... if he didn't explain who the guy is the last 2 paragraphs would be pointless IMO. Wink

I'm quite comfortable with reviews which digress, as long as somewhere within them is a review of the album. I think this one passes that test OK.

more like an article than a review, but hard to complain when it's so well written.

Indeed; the way you were setting it up, I thought he'd written a review with a length worthy of me. As it stands? Short, sweet, elegant.
