Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler, Peter Brotzmann, Cecil Taylor, John Coltrane, Eric Dolphy, Pharoah Sanders, Anthony Braxton, Sun Ra, Archie Shepp, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Andrew Hill, Don Cherry, etc. Granted, there's different levels of noisiness in all of them (Brotzmann is probably the loudest), and they don't really rock very much (except for some of Brotzmann's projects like Last Exit), so they may not all be what you're looking for, and I'll admit I haven't heard all of them, but they're important. That's not a personal slight against Polar Bear, although I remember not being especially impressed by the samples, but I think you should know the famous things before you go diving into Jamesland. That's part of what frustrates me about James, he will constantly find all these random obscure bands that don't even have an AMG entry, but he still doesn't own an Ornette Coleman album.

And I'll grant you that the electronic jazz thing is hard to come by in older artists (although I think Wadada Leo Smith and Evan Parker both released albums with electronics some time recently), so I'm not saying there's no reason to listen to new stuff, but when you still haven't heard Albert Ayler (unless you have), then I don't see the need for listening to Polar Bear just because James likes them.
Oooh, Evan Parker has a new album this year. I don't have any of his albums, but I might as well start there, so I can be pretentious and put it on my end of the year list here. ;-)

I'm listening to what I'm listening to because I like them. There is still so much jazz I want to hear that it isn't funny, not to mention prog or classical.

I don't think anyone listens to things just cause James likes them. He
has given me quite a few suggestions that turned out to be fruitful.
(Polar Bear being one of them) And I know I have gotten into the older jazz acts from listening to bands such as Led Bib, Polar Bear and the rest. It may be better to start with the older acts, but you don't have to start there to be able to appreciate jazz in general.
