It's Coltrane time.

I got The Shape of Jazz To Come the other day... very interesting, I'm still getting over the fact there's a trumpet (and I consider trumpets obnoxious instruments), but otherwise, really interesting. And the bass was particularly neat.

Her Majesty is their worst album. ![Wink Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif)
Still good though.

You say that, but it doesn't really sound any different musically than their other albums. (Again The Crane Wife excluded from that comment since I haven't heard it).

![Thumbs Up Thumbs Up](smileys/smiley20.gif) That's a wonderful album. Ornette Coleman is a freaking genius, but not as good as Coltrane (then again, who is?). This Is Our Music is pretty much like The Shape of Jazz to Come Part 2 if you want to hear more.

Each album is musically different from one another. The similarities are contained mostly within the first 3 releases; I would say The Crane Wife and the Hazards of Love changed the game up quite a bit both times, while still keeping the Decemberists flavor. Maybe you're referring to that? Her Majesty is by far the most stripped-down sounding of any of their albums, and that's why it is my least favorite. It almost feels like just a Colin Meloy solo album (well, what one would sound like) for most of it. It's pleasant, but not as fun and well-crafted as the debut or Picaresque... and not near as artistically accomplished as TCW or Hazards. Don't give up.

Acoustic bass solos may be the most pretentious solos ever. But they're amazing.

Now trying Picaresque. They really remind me of another band that I have heard but I can't place who it is right now.

I actually am curious to hear that. I usually don't like covers though.
