After an hour's drive up to Noosa, the Sunshine Coast Record fair yielded the following :
SAVOY BROWN - Looking In WISHBONE ASH - New England ZAPPA - Them Or Us URIAH HEEP - The Magician's Birthday (had a copy many years ago.....) ........ And now the $5 bargain bin selections (don't laugh.....) : CHICAGO - 19 (never seen it on vinyl, and I stopped after their '17' album, years ago....) SKYHOOKS - Hot For The Orient (who could resist a bit of Aussie Rock ? And rather hard to find) (......don't laugh more,....... RAY THOMAS - From Mighty Oaks Hopes, Wishes & Dreams (both mint, and great covers) Waiting in the mail for : KRALLICE - Hyperion 12" DEATHSPELL OMEGA - A Synarchy Of Molten Bones LP (which, I guess, counter-balances the Ray Thomas....) ................. ....and the verdict : Just with a cursory 'flip through' .........the 2 RT albums are not good. Only a few moments here and there - some pretty flute, elaborate bass, inspired guitars, but Ray wasn't 'much chop' without his Moody buddies.......beautiful cover arts though. Can't see him having much of a fan-base outside of the MB....... The Chicago sounds much like the previous 80's output. Well played AOR but somewhat generic. Inoffensive at best. Zappa sounds TERRIFIC. Only heard Sinister Footwear III and I'm excited. Wishbone sounded promising. Have yet to hear a weak album from them. This one is my 8th of theirs. The Heep's Magician is pretty decent - my fave after the debut. Quite surprised with the Savoy Brown album - bluesy, done well, great sound. I'm pleased with this one. Skyhooks are simplistic Rock but I don't mind 'em. Haven't heard this one since about 1989. This album sports some New Wave leanings. Overall, 90 bucks well spent, with an additional 10 bucks that could've bought me a decent lunch. Damn you Ray, your Moodies songs are usually my faves........ Tom, you have finally branched out and got "New England". A real favourite of mine....4 stars from me. Skyhooks..... a unique, successful (in Oz at least), urban act....and very Melbourne. Ahead of their time in some ways; lived on the edge of censorship before punk. They had a great pop songwriter in Greg McCainsh. Their 1976 album "Straight In a Gay, Gay World" ...good title hey? Check out their catalogue. |

I had many Skyhooks albums back in the day. Hot For The Orient suffers from not having Shirl and Red, but Greg's still here, another very good bassist too !! Edited by Tom Ozric - November 15 2016 at 04:15 |

Damn mountaineers!!! Yup I'm jealous. Oh and I know about losing a great deal weight only to put on a good chunk again...sooo irritating. But sure I agree - better to wait for the new year to come round - when everyone else suddenly catch a jolt of healthy living Anyway if it's any consolation I'd trade places with you in a heartbeat. Haven't been able to move properly since February due to a pinched nerve in my hip going all the way down my leg. No sensation/control whatsoever which effectively means that I've been walking around like some mad take on Ministry Of Silly Walks. It has since then morphed into a pinched nerve in my shoulder(s) -meaning no weight-training or babythrowing for me. Btw are you on a black metal trip atm? Sure seems like it! Love that new Aluk Todolo album even if it doesn't quite reach the heights of it's predecessor Occult Rock. Cheerio comrade - feel the beard. |

Oh I'm digging it alright The Comet Is Coming is equally impressive. I thank you for your outstanding jazz recs - I wish I could throw something your way along the same lines, but it is exceedingly rare that I come across modern jazz artists that really knocks me off my feet. Fire! Orchestra is the only act I can think of actually...but I gather you're already familiar with the lot. Sun Ra teams up with a flock of reed-birds. Love the new Goat album. I think it's their best release to date - even surpassing the debut by some way. Funny how they've somehow managed to sound more psych whilst at the same time resorting to an altogether more acoustic sounding palette. |

New acquisitions:
Wolf People - Ruins (British psych band channelling a raw unadulterated folk take on Amon Düül ll) Lustmord - Dark Matter (Fiddling around with recordings of space and planet orbits) Kalevala - People No Names (Finnish tomfoolery from back in the day) Alex's Hand - Künstler Scheisse (Jamband avantguarde blues with psychedelic fittings...oh yes and it goes well with cucumbers and lardo) Il Paradiso Degli Orchi - Il Corponauta (A present from an Italian friend who thought I'd dig it...haven't spun it as of yet though...but I think tonight's the night) Alcest - Kodama (Return to "form" with Ecailles de Lune version 2.0) Black Bombaim & Peter Brötzmann - s/t (Space Rock takes a nosedive into Albert Ayler territory. Approach with caution if you know Black Bombaim...definitely a left-field move from them (which I rather dig tbh)) Oh sh*t! SIMON!!!! I completely forgot to return to you regarding that Éléphant Tôk album Well get on it son. That's about all I can say. Pretty much one of the finest albums of 2016...and I just love the way Daniel Jeand'heur sounds on the drums. He is on fire! Edited by Guldbamsen - November 16 2016 at 11:25 |

^I'd be interested in hearing how that Pinhas collab sounds Ian. Is he still doing that Metal Machine Music meets a distorted Fripp or maybe going elsewhere with his experiments?

Righty, I got to get me my Goat now! As regards the jazz recs I am very happy you liked the suggestions, the best thing about this place is if you can spread the love for something. Besides which your posts and reviews have turned me on to more stuff than I can remember I will venture just one more jazz rec for this year, for I am sworn to buy no more jazz albums until 2017. It's this: Two Finnish shamans bringing saxes, clarinets, flutes, gralla, drums, percussion and a little chanting to a party under ancient trees. On the back of the digipack is a little poem: On this journey the spirits of the forest encounter the gentle touch of the woodwinds. Drums knock on the doors of eternal beings Do they open - and who dares to enter? which is a better description than I can give. Sorry that I can't find any samples or video online (I bought this one on instinct), but if the above sounds interesting you probably wouldn't be disappointed. I just read that Merzbow has done an album of Sun Ra remixes...but I didn't hear it yet. 2017 better come soon dammit! |

Wolf People and Alex's Hand will be on my year end list without doubt, I have yet to hear any of the others I was aware of the Black Bombaim / Brötzmann collab because it's on Clean Feed, a really nice label out of Portugal who also put out one of my top two or three favourite albums for this year in any genre, Starlite Motel's Awosting Falls:
No sweat David, I had to get it eventually, but it just went right up the list
