Yes, she really write like a teenager. Maybe it's because it was intended as such. But even Eric Carle has better texts.
 
And the lack of general knowledge about vampires, well, I suppose was necessary to make the love story "credible"... But I found that pretty annoying myself. Gimme Lestat over that any time.
