THE MONKS OF DOOM - "The Insect God" (EP) (1992) When Camper Van Beethoven split up, David Lowery (singer) formed Cracker, while the remaining guys (plus a 2nd guitarist) formed a much more obscure outfit called The Monks of Doom, with bassist Victor Krummenacher on lead vocals. It's unfortunate how few were aware of this excellent group. They made 4 albums plus this EP in the late 80s and early 90s. It's definitely on the prog rock side of indie rock. This EP contains 5 tracks - 3 originals and 2 covers. The covers are well done and pretty off the wall (Syd Barrett's rarity "Let's Split" done at punk tempo; The Mothers' "Who Are the Brain Police"). And the originals are among their best: the 7 minute title track moves through several dramatic sections in retelling the story of a girl's kidnapping, "Chang" plays like a late-period Beefheart instrumental, and "If it Don't Kill Me" is a compelling straightforward rock tune with good riffs. Ask your local grocer for THE MONKS OF DOOM today.

1st listen. Touch of Grey was the first Grateful Dead song that crossed my ears (I think). They never really had any radio play on rock radio until this song was released. Listening to it now, it sounds like a cross of Dire Straits and the Moody Blues.

First listen? Cool. I think I first heard it when I was like 17 or 18. And I know that I will bring the wrath of the entire deadhead community down upon my head for this, but In the Dark is actually my favorite Dead album. My favorite is Throwing Stones...great, great song. Hell in a Bucket and When Push Comes To Shove are my other favorites on the album (primarily for their amusing lyrics-although Weir must have been taking vocal lessons from Stipe for Hell in a Bucket, because the words are almost indecipherable in parts).

Yes. I used to hear Touch of Grey on the radio and see the video on MTV plenty of times, but I had never actually listened to the album until now. Now:

I feel like if I can't hear silence, listen to silence (since my co-workers are blasting classic and contemporary rock), I have to listen to something ambient. And if I don't listen to that, I might throw up or go insane. Don't know if anyone around here ever had that same feeling.

STEELY DAN - "The Royal Scam"
Dan gets Dark. Some of the best lyrics on the planet reside on this album, and the music is some of their best too.
