Well of course KC had to go. It's the one most people would except to win. We need to mix it up now and then, Pat.

Alex Lifeson wasn't even close to a virtuoso. Skilled, but hardly pulling out insane legato licks like Allan Holdsworth or kick ass alternate picked lines like Al Dimeola.. Peart is the most capable member IMO.. again, while Geddy is skilled, I can think of a million bass players who make him look like a hack.
In fact, that's my only beef with Rush to be honest, is their skills being hyped up beyond what they can actually play.

I never said they can't play their own stuff. I'm saying they are made out to be virtuosos, when clearly they are not. Alex Lifeson is hardly Randy Rhoads, Uli Jon Roth or John Petrucci, as Geddy Lee is hardly John Myung or Billy Sheehan. Neil Peart ain't Mike Mangini or Virgil Donati either. And BTW, I don't think they are overrated... they are just as important to prog as anything that Rob happens to be a fanboy of ![Wink Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif)
ELP, Yes, Genesis, Floyd and *perhaps* also Tull aside, I agree. They're definitely a bit better known than VDGG, though not as ultra-amazing. Who knows, perhaps Hammill's vocal influences might actually end up being more influential than Rush.
Oh, so 30+ years down the road isn't enough time to tell who's more influential?
Oh, so 30+ years down the road isn't enough time to tell who's more influential? ![Wink Wink](smileys/smiley2.gif)
Hammill was certainly pioneering and expanding the voice. Equally, Jaxon the sax, and Banton and Evans, though somewhat overlooked, are interesting players. It seems possible to me that might in the long term prove a more significant impact than influencing a load of mediocre bands a little down the road and getting a bit more mainstream critical acclaim/commercial success. Bowie and Fish were really influenced by Hammill, and some of the odd new wavey work on World Record and Still Life, as well as the punk aggression in the vocals has been influential in some circles. Not to mention Plague, which led to the joining of the bits of Supper's Ready. No question that Rush are the bigger band, but I think VDGG have definitely done more for music, just in so distinctive a way that it's more difficult to copy or build on.
