Well... I'm not sure.

Some of it was quite cool and I quite liked Grandpa Simpson's vocals (want of a better style for him) on Part 1.  Some of it was a little... well, I'm not sure.  Some of it I liked, some I didn't.  The second part was much stronger in my opinion and the guitar bit at the end was not too bad.

Having said that, it wasn't really that crazy to my ears, it was actually quite mellow and not noisy at all.  I just feel as if some of it sounds like it was recorded in a garden shed in Osaka though.  The one beat seems to persevere througout the whole thing (both parts) and then there is this bit where it sounds like a cat crying, a child crying... lots of weird stuff and lots of chimes as well.

It didn't seem to have any coherence and seemed like a jam to me.  It may grow on me, but I don't know how much I'll play it.

Is this typical of Krautrock as a whole?

As for the the Boredoms, they had:

Onanie Bomb Meets The Sex Pistols
Pop Tatari
Super Are
Vision Creation Newsun
Seadrum/House of Sun

Pop Tatari is available for £8.

I've put an order in for Gold and Green by OOIOO and some Gentle Giant limited edition remasters, as well as Nicholas Greenwood's Cold Cuts album.

As for how typical this style is for Krautrock. Yes and no. Most people really don't realise how disverse the genre is. They take more influences from the more experimental style of Krautrock. I think if I were to suggest some to you I would look at the more Jazzy side of the genre with bands like Guru Guru and Eiliff (there are many more but I could not be asked to list them all at this moment).

For those Boredoms album I think you would find the most joy out of these three albums:

Super Are
Vision Creation Newsun
Seadrum/House of Sun

I really like the first two, and Pop Tatari got me into the Boredoms music, but I think the others would be more to your taste. Onanie Bomb Meets The Sex Pistols is their first album, which almost acts as a compilation of their earlier years before releasing any true material. I was wonder, how much is this going for a your store as I know it is quite expense to order from my store.

Thoroughly recommended.  I think I'll be getting some of their other albums too, in the future.

Good to hear Clap My first experience with the group, and as of yet one of my most favorite straight forward RIO releases!

Hey lads! I'm back from Ireland (I had a great time! - but more on that later) and I just finished reading most of the stuff posted here in my absence. I feel like I need another holiday now... LOL

To respond to the post that was aimed most directly at me now:

Originally posted by Geck0 Geck0 wrote:

So you're also thinking Avant-prog for OOIOO as well?  I'd be happy with that, but of course, it's down to what Joren, David (Trouserpress) and Chris (Syzygy) decide on at the end of the day.  I think Joren has quite a big say though.

I'm not sure what this expression means (having a big say), but if it means what I think it does, I'd like to say: All our votes weigh the same. The only reason why I'm sometimes called team leader (or something similar) is that I was the first to join the chart on Mike's website and therefore I am so far the only person with the ability to add bands to the chart - Mike designed it like that. So I am leader in a bureaucratical sense only. LOL Assaf and Chris know a lot more about RIO/avant-garde music than I do, and I think David's and my knowledge of RIO/avant is comparable...

Has Joren heard any OOIOO yet by the way?  I hope he has the time to hear some soon, as I feel they should be added here.

I know it sounds a bit dodgy, but maybe a separate Japanese Prog section could be added?  I realise this is somewhat ambiguous though, as a band like Happy Family does not sound like Boredoms or OOIOO... but it could solve some problems.  Not all Japanese bands have to go in this genre either.  Maybe more accurately, it should be Experimental Japanese?

I don't know, I think we should stick to the genres we have really, what are your thoughts on this?

Because of the posts here, I actually just put up "Gold and Green" for the first time and, wow -> cool stuff! My first taste of OOIOO probably won't be my last. It reminds me of Boredoms, but it has a little Zeuhl (and RIO/avant-weirdness in general) and noise thrown in the mix as well I think. Considering that Boredoms and Smegma will be added under RIO/Avant-Prog, I don't see a problem with adding OOIOO there as well. Anyway, I added them to the voting chart and I voted yes myself.

About a "(experimental) Japanese" subgenre on the website: The collaborator team recently had a heated debate about geographical subgenres. A lot of people think the subgenre "Italian Prog" should be lifted, because there are no big features that distinguish the Italian symphonic prog bands from their foreign counterparts. In short, many feel that subgenres based solely on geographic boundaries should not exist. (this excludes, of course LOL, Krautrock - which was coined early on as a certain brand of experimental, sometimes very specifically German sounding music with a vivid music 'scene'; and the Canterbury Scene, where a signature sound was a created that was adopted by bands abroad as well).

I've not yet heard Gold and Green (I have Feather Float, Kila Kila Kila and TAIGA), but it is on order.

If you have any of their other albums, do give them a listen, I don't think you'll be too disappointed.

Good to hear you're back safely as well, I suspect you had a good time!

Thanks. I sure did. If you're curious, I could post a few pictures that I posted in the collaborator zone before.

I don't have any other OOIOO albums though.

Hey Adam, have you mentioned Black Dice here already?

http://www.blackdice.net/dicemain.htm

Experimental and noise band from the USA. They had a split with Wolf Eyes.
So far the sounds I am hearing from them are something I think you might be interested in.  (I think we are alone on this noise frontier with Merzbow and this band).

Ah yes, fantastic band and that record has been getting a flogging of late. I love it. And no I have not mentioned them yet, I have been meaning to but have never gotten around to it. I'm glad you are liking them, I told Fourside about them as well and he liked them so we are not alone

I have heard their earlier album are more harsh noise, but I am yet to check anymore of their material out.

Oh, did you like Merzbow Assaf? (or am I reading this wrong?) if so that is good news. I can recommend some similar stuff if you are interested?

I know I will be criticized for this, but yes I dig Merzbow's Noise. When listening to it at the right time, it can be relieving (I know how this sounds like, but you must take int account that for me, metal music calms me down, so you can understand what lies behind my weird spirit....)

It is nice to see I am not alone, I have been looking in the genre of late. And Wolf Eyes I really starting to grow on me, I might even pick up some of the stuff. What did you think of their lastest album? Also they have a Wolf Eyes poster in my store, so I'm going to try and see if they will give it to me.

I don't know if you remember when I reconised them, but there were some very negative responses. I can totally understand when you talk abotu the relieve sense. The first time I listen to Merzbow, I was just lying on my bed and it really was a great experience. Almost other worldly. Maybe it is both out metal ties coming into play here?

Hey, I'm interested in noise as well. I just haven't got further than Smegma yet... well, except for the Smegma/Wolf Eyes album. Thumbs Up

If it's noies you want, you'll get it. Wink

Do you have the Merzbow?

If so then you might want Black Dice as well (another thing altogether, more electronic perhaps, but still out there).
And what about Wolf Eyes? I believe you have it.

I don't have any Merzbow. I don't have the entire Wolf Eyes album - I couldn't find all the tracks on the web. But when I have money again I will consider buying an actual copy.

As much as I appreciate your generosity, please be easy on my harddisk and brain... they both can't handle all this new music. I am still trying to find my way through the Smegma discography. I also found (out) a lot of new stuff about them. Stay tuned for some interesting details (maybe tomorrow) and eventually the addition (somewhere in the coming few months definitely). I already started work on a bio... about a year ago I think (no, seriously... I've been waiting for this a long time).

Big smile

If you think this is too much name dropping, go to the Zeuhl 5 thread and follow Yukorina and Adam's chats. Then this thread will seem like some light conversation in comparison....
