I have a soft spot for the group although I basically NEVER play them anymore. Grand Illusion has the most good songs IMO

I always liked Crystal Ball the best.
It was their proverbial fork in the road, so they took it. Grand Illusion had some great stuff, but their direction became too commercial for my taste. And it was all downhill from there.
I saw Styx in Peoria around '80, and they were way out of sync - it was the first night of the tour and a very ragged show. I saw them with Yes in 2011, and they were much better. That night Yes was quite ragged, and a lot of people thought Styx outplayed them (sacrilege, for sure).
I'd say Styx outplayed Benoit David and Geoff Downes. Despite the lackluster band performance, Howe was on fire, and Squire was sublime.

Got dragged to a Styx show with some boozing friends.....and they were much better than expected. They always seem to be touring, guess it paid off. Can't say I'm a fan outside of a couple of tracks (Father OSA, Suite Madam Blue, Fooling Yourself, among others), but I love it when they come on the radio.

Loved 'The Grand Illusion' and 'Pieces of Eight' during my late 70s pomp rock phase along with Kansas and Starcastle etc. 'Cornerstone' wasn't consistent enough, and didn't really explore the back catalogue. Part AOR and part-prog - they filled a gap on the turntable as some of the classic/prog rock bands lost their way around that time.

I'm not sure which one is best, but The Serpent is Rising has always been my favorite.

Styx II is a pretty good album, I've always loved the bluesy 'A Day'.

Serpent whips Illusion any time of the day..........( and I truly connect with Styx ) Truly underrated IMHO. Paradise Theater was rubbish compared to Kilroy, and Kilroy a total cheese-fest to Cornerstone. Cornerstone was slightly weaker than Pieces Of Eight, and then take your pick what you consider to be a prog-masterpiece. All superb whilst Curulewski was in the band................Serpent is my ultra fave from STYX.
