Why is Carl Palmer or any Yes drummer absent from the list? Phil Collins would have been nice as an option as well.

I suspect that the topic starter only listed his favourites, since Bill Bruford, Carl Palmer, Phil Collins would seem obvious choices.  I note that it's modern prog drummer dominated.  We've had so many drummer polls over the years, and I doubt many of them omitted Bruford, Palmer, and Collins, so at least this is rather different from others.  Kind of surprised to see Lars Ulrich on the list, and that he got two votes.  I don't actually know his work that well, but have read quite a few dismissive comments on him at PA.

Other than Tony Williams, Pierre Moerlen, Chris Cutler, Giulio Capiozzo, Jaki Liebezeit, Christian Vander and Billy Hart are some other favourites of mine, but I wouldn't expect them to make the list.

BILLY COBHAM

End of thread.

He''s a great drummer too of corse, though I prefer Tony Williams based on what I know.  I read an interesting thread once that talks about Cobham, and Cobham's views on Williams at allaboutjazz.  Found it: http://forums.allaboutjazz.com/showthread.php?t=36253 And a related article: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=30993

Interesting that Cobham accused Williams of playing too loud, as I have thought of Cobham as a loud drummer, but of course both were versatile, and Cobham has played differently for different projects.  I'm not that familiar with Cobham's work outside Mahavishnu Orchestra or his early solo material -- used to like Spectrum a lot.  But then the fusion work is the most applicable to this poll, and one can expect more loudness in jazz-rock/ electric jazz framework.

You know who doesn''t get a lot of love around here? Roger Taylor. He may not have the prog chops of somebody like Bruford, but his sense of time is outstanding and I always find it a joy to listen to him play.

Thought you were talking about the Duran Duran drummer; then I remembered the guy who played for Queen (after looking it up).

Queen were an extremely good "rhythmic" band. Taylor and Deacon could both really lock into the groove and Freddie Mercury, when he played piano, was astoundingly precise. Listen to the piano parts in songs like Somebody to Love or Killer Queen. They sound almost like a player piano in how dead on the beat they are.

Timing is pretty easy when you play a simple 4/4 beat all day. Tongue

Not really. There are tons of drummers who play straight ahead four four beats all day, but few of them really have the same internal grasp of the beat that Roger did. I don't know, it's hard to explain, but it just feels different when a drummer is really nailing it, even on a simple rhythm.

I had noticed that before, but listened again to those songs on youtube and really hear what you're saying.

Yes, Roger Taylor (the Queen's one) is very good as drummer.
I also really like him as a composer and singer, although I know that this viewpoint is not often shared.
The songs he wrote and sang in the 70's are among my favorite ones (Tenement Fuster, Drowse, I'm in love with my car, Sheer Heart attack ...).
There is always a great positive and somewhat "electric energy" in it.
A kind of "Rage of life" (don't know if this is very english ...)

I really enjoy his writing and singing with Queen, and also his solo work (especially, the albums Fun In Space and Electric Fire), as well as the Cross album Mad, Bad and Dangerous to Know.
I can understand your anger at me, but what did the horse I rode in on ever do to you?

Why no Keith Moon, Mitch Mitchell, John French, Robert Wyatt, Bill Bruford or Barrie Barlow on the list?
He looks at this world and wants it all... so he strikes, like Thunderball!

I like Roger Taylor as well mainly because he had/has his own style as a dynamic heavy rock drummer. As a kid I was very excited when I heard Seven Seas Of Rye and much of that is down to Taylor imo.
