I think Rush have always adapted amazingly well to whatever the musical climate is at that point. 'Grace Under Pressure' isn't a favourite of mine- I only really like 'Distant Early Warning', 'Red Sector A' and 'Between The Wheels', the rest I can live without- but they had moved with the times, IMHO, and I give them credit for that.
 
As for my favourite solo, it has to be 'Xanadu' or 'Closer To The Heart' for me.

I love The Camera Eye solo. Of course his jazz-like solo in La Villa is a fave too. Wink

Well I couldn't let a discussion about Lifeson's solo go by without chiming in. Unfortunately I have nothing new to add here, Most of my favorites have been mentioned. Someone did mention his work on GUP and I have to agree with that person, Some of his best ever. Clap

Definitely. I think GUP is a great guitar album generally.
When I started a 'definitive Lifeson performance album' thread about a year ago, I chose Grace Under Pressure as being my personal favorite. There's something so cold in Lifeson's delivery that works perfectly in the harshness of Grace Under Pressure. I find it to be a pretty raw album, and Lifeson's playing is a reflection of that.And anyone who says Lifeson is overrated, well all I have to say (and to quote Monty Python) is, "I f*rt in your general direction!!" It's a 'cold' album, and when I first heard it back in 1984 I didn't like it at all. I wanted all Rush albums to sound like Moving Pictures. I remember reading peoples comments in Heavy Metal magazines at the time. People were saying Rush had sold out and were trying to be U2 etc. It took me a year or so of growing up to realise that GUP is a 'stand out' Rush album, comprised of very emotional music, which cleverly DOES sit well alongside other more mainstream music of the time, without actually resembling it at all. Rush were very good at that in the 80's.
 
Rush is the band that went through the 80's in the best fashion.  What other prog act maintained such a success (while maintaining quality and integrity) in the 80's ?

Interesting GUP gets so much love.  I agree Lifeson's solo work on it is excellent but the material was a huge let down among Rush fans I knew.. so flat , depressed and mechanical compared to any previous Rush record

..and those haircuts..  ghaaa!!

I don't know about best solo, but my favorite Lifeson guitar album is Snakes and Arrows, his presence is much different and I personally love it

Thank you for mentioning Kid Gloves, it was my choice and its good to see someone else at least knows of it. And I agree with an earlier comment about how GUP is getting quite a bit of high praise, not at all a bad thing just surprising to see how many people love it as much as I do.

An interesting side note - when I was at the R:30 tour a couple years back the guy next  to me had the vinyl record of GUP as well as a back stage pass, he came back to his seat with the album signed by the entire band plus a funny doodle Alex made on the guys head, I was jealous.

And what a great album it is especially because of Lifeson!  I really had hoped he would receive more acclaim for his efforts on it, Prog or not. The album is jam packed with guitar goodness.

I didn't fully appreciate Grace Under Pressure until I bought the remastered disc several years ago. Up until then I only liked "Distant", "Kid Gloves", and "Between The Wheels". Now, however, it's become one of my favorites.

i believe that because of Signals and GUP, Rush hold the record for the most consecutive great albums..

I really like the little solo on lakeside park, sweet but with an angular little twist
the solo on Necromancer is one of his most melodic
How about the one from Something for Nothing?
Like everyone else the La Villa solo (particular the volume pedal swells) are awesome
I just love the cool calm and collected little solo from Different Strings, a perfect case of the solo serving the song and not ego
Weird one - the slide solo (very un-Alex) from Making Memories
Red Barchetta - so tasteful
Analog Kid - a big step forward for Alex - pretty technical compared to previously
Kid Gloves - just awesome
